Questions

• What experience do entry-level product designers need?

A strong portfolio showing design process and finished work matters more than years of experience. Most employers expect familiarity with design tools, basic wireframing and prototyping skills, and evidence of thinking through user problems rather than just creating visually appealing surfaces.

• What does a typical day involve?

Days mix design work with meetings—design critique, stakeholder feedback, engineering handoffs, and user research sessions. Designers move between focused work on interface details and broader conversations about product direction and feasibility.

• How much time goes to meetings versus hands-on design?

This varies widely by company and seniority. Senior designers often spend more time in planning and alignment; junior designers typically have larger blocks for execution but attend more review sessions to receive feedback.

• What skills matter most in product design?

Problem-solving and communication rank as high as technical tool proficiency. Designers need to articulate decisions to non-designers, synthesize conflicting feedback, understand basic analytics, and move comfortably between aesthetic and functional thinking.

• How does product design differ from UX design?

Product design is broader, encompassing strategy and business goals alongside user experience. UX design focuses specifically on how users interact with interfaces, while product design includes decisions about what to build and why.

• What's the path from junior to senior roles?

Junior designers typically work on discrete features or flows under direction; mid-level designers own products or major sections and influence strategy; senior designers shape product direction and lead teams. Progression depends on impact, stakeholder influence, and demonstrated strategic thinking.

• How much collaboration happens with other teams?

Constant collaboration is the norm. Product designers work daily with engineers, product managers, researchers, and marketers, and sometimes with data analysts, customer support, and leadership depending on the decision's scope.

• Does product design require coding skills?

Not typically required, though basic understanding of technical feasibility helps communication with engineers. Some designers learn basic front-end skills, but most rely on strong partnerships with engineering to translate designs into working products.

• What does design critique and feedback involve?

Regular feedback sessions expose work-in-progress to peers, managers, and stakeholders for discussion and improvement. These critique sessions can be collaborative problem-solving or challenging, depending on team culture; they're essential to refining decisions before development.

• How does product design differ from graphic design?

Product design solves interactive problems at scale across digital platforms, while graphic design creates static visual communications. Product designers think about user flows and functionality; graphic designers focus on visual hierarchy and communication within fixed compositions.
