The Opportunity

We currently have a newly created opportunity for a commercially minded and experienced Legal Counsel to partner with the Executive Leadership Team and Board, providing strategic legal advice across franchising, commercial contracts, governance, compliance and regulatory matters.

Acting as a trusted business enabler, you will identify legal risks and opportunities, deliver practical solutions and help the organisation achieve its objectives safely, responsibly and commercially.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, commercially focused legal counsel and business partnering support to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and key stakeholders.
  • Lead and oversee Pedders' commercial contracting framework, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating key commercial agreements and ensuring effective contract governance and risk management.
  • Provide legal oversight and commercially focused advice across Pedders’ franchise and authorised dealership network, including franchise agreements, renewals, transfers, exits, disputes, compliance and new franchise models.
  • Provide legal advice and support to the Board and Executive Leadership Team on corporate governance, director duties, corporate compliance and significant corporate decisions.
  • Advise on legal risk management and regulatory compliance obligations across the business.
  • Manage and provide strategic advice on disputes, claims, investigations and litigation matters.
  • Provide legal support across Pedders' products, manufacturing operations, intellectual property, consumer law and brand portfolio, including product liability, warranties, claims and advertising.
  • Provide legal advice and support across Pedders' property portfolio, including leases, renewals, negotiations, acquisitions, disposals and property-related matters.
  • Partner with the People & Culture team to provide legal guidance on employment and workplace matters.
  • Advise on privacy, data protection, cyber security and technology-related legal issues.
  • Manage external legal advisers and legal expenditure, determining when specialist external expertise is required and ensuring commercially focused, value-driven outcomes.
  • Drive legal awareness across the organisation by promoting legal best-practice, developing practical guidance and supporting leaders and managers to understand and manage legal risk.

What You Bring To The Team

  • Australian law degree and current Australian practising certificate, with significant post-admission experience, ideally including experience in an in-house environment.
  • Strong commercial and corporate law expertise, with demonstrated experience drafting, negotiating and managing complex commercial agreements and providing practical legal support to a diverse business.
  • Demonstrated experience in franchising law and/or working within a franchise, retail or multi-site environment will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide pragmatic, commercially focused legal advice that supports strategic business objectives and enables effective decision-making.
  • Strong understanding of Australian corporate and commercial law, with the ability to assess and manage legal risk effectively.
  • Proven experience managing disputes, litigation matters and external legal advisers with a focus on achieving practical and commercially appropriate outcomes.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills, with confidence engaging senior executives and Board-level stakeholders.
  • Strong commercial judgement, integrity and independence, with the ability to challenge constructively and navigate complex business issues.
  • A collaborative, business-oriented approach, with the ability to build trusted relationships and operate effectively across a broad range of functions and stakeholders.
  • Experience in a franchising environment will be highly regarded
