Design & System Integration Engineer

Are you ready to turn operational needs into smart, buildable mission equipment to be installed and used on our vessels? As a Design & System Integration Engineer at DEME, you take ownership of multidisciplinary engineering projects with a strong mechanical focus. You translate functional requirements into concepts, coordinate the input of electrical, hydraulic and control disciplines, and guide external engineering partners from basic design through construction, commissioning and first operations. This is a broad technical project engineering role for someone who combines technical judgement with coordination skills. You do not need to be a specialist in every technical discipline. We are looking for a broad engineer who knows how to bring the right expertise together, ask critical questions and drive a project forward.

You will work from our Headquarters in Zwijndrecht, Belgium, with occasional (20%) traveling to suppliers and vessel sites.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of mission equipment, such as lifting tools, from the initial request through construction, commissioning and first operations.
  • Engage with internal clients and technical stakeholders to understand how the equipment will be used, define the required functionality and translate these needs into a clear design basis.
  • Develop mechanical concepts, functional descriptions, preliminary calculations and basic drawings without taking the design into full detail engineering.
  • Set up the project approach, define engineering and procurement strategies, identify the right internal and external partners, and coordinate the overall execution.
  • Manage and challenge external engineering offices, critically reviewing their detailed designs for technical quality, feasibility, integration and compliance with the agreed requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary input across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and control systems, ensuring that all interfaces come together in one coherent solution.
  • Follow up fabrication after engineering, resolve technical issues during construction and safeguard alignment with the approved design.
  • Prepare test and commissioning plans, support commissioning activities and follow the equipment during its first operations to validate performance and capture improvements.
  • Monitor project scope, planning, budget, risks and technical documentation, taking a leading and coordinating role throughout the project lifecycle.

Your profile

  • You hold a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. A Master Degree is a must, Bachelors will not be taken into consideration.
  • You have approximately 3 to 5 years of relevant experience as a Project Engineer, Lead Engineer, Technical Engineer or in a comparable multidisciplinary engineering role.
  • You have a strong affinity with mechanical systems and their integration with electrical, hydraulic and control systems. A highly specialized structural or naval architecture background is not required.
  • You can develop and assess concepts at a functional and basic design level, while confidently steering detailed engineering performed by external partners.
  • You combine technical insight with project management skills and can coordinate several stakeholders, disciplines and interfaces at the same time.
  • You communicate clearly, challenge designs constructively and make well-founded decisions with a focus on safe, practical and buildable solutions.
  • You take ownership, create structure and are comfortable growing into a broader lead engineering role.
  • Experience from the maritime or offshore industry is welcome but not essential. Relevant experience from another project-based technical sector can also be a strong fit.
  • You are willing to travel occasionally to suppliers, construction sites, commissioning locations and initial operations.

Our offer

  • A broad engineering role with real ownership, combining mechanical concept engineering, project coordination and system integration.
  • The opportunity to guide multidisciplinary projects from an operational need to a tested and working solution.
  • A collaborative environment where you work with internal experts and external engineering and construction partners across multiple technical domains.
  • A strong learning platform for engineers who want to grow towards larger and more complex lead engineering responsibilities.
  • Exposure to innovative offshore vessels and dredging vessels related projects within an international company.
  • A competitive compensation package with benefits tailored to your needs.
