As a GIS Engineer within Marine Installation / Marine Engineering, you will:
- Work on large‑scale subsea cable projects for leading energy developers and utilities.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including survey, marine engineering, operations, and project management.
- Influence how geographical information is used to design, install and protect subsea cable routes.
WELCOMING YOU TO THE TEAM
We are looking for a Geographical Information System (GIS) Engineer to join our Marine Installation / Marine Engineering function in Oslo, Norway (SLS Norway).
You will report to the Discipline Manager Survey and Protection / Marine Lead Engineer and be responsible for managing and coordinating all GIS‑related engineering work and reporting required in assigned projects.
You will work closely with:
- Survey engineers and marine engineers
- Operations Managers and offshore teams
- Project Managers and client representatives
- Subcontractors and suppliers delivering survey and route data
HOW YOU MAKE AN IMPACT
As GIS Engineer, you will take ownership of the GIS engineering part in marine cable projects, ensuring that geographical data is correctly managed, shared and used to support safe, efficient and compliant marine operations.
Your key responsibilities include:
Engineering & Preparation
- Set up the GIS project and ensure a robust structure for all spatial data.
- Import, process and transform survey and other relevant data into the GIS system in line with project requirements.
- Support the survey engineer on data formats and specifications for additional surveys.
- Take responsibility for issuing cable route coordinates and Route Position Lists (RPL).
- Publish geographical data so it is available, accurate and up to date for other disciplines and external users.
- Support the project with geographical information and GIS‑based reporting.
You will also support survey and GIS‑related documentation in the project, including:
- Technical specifications for survey and route‑related activities.
- Operational procedures and relevant calculations.
- Trench performance evaluation based on available soil information.
- Design and document reviews (DIC, IDC and other document review processes).
- As‑built documentation, including data from onshore and near‑shore activities.
Project Participation & Coordination
- Ensure that Nexans’ and project‑specific HSE and Quality requirements are incorporated into delegated engineering and procurement activities.
- Support the survey engineer in the follow‑up of subcontracted work such as Survey, ROV, vessel and other contracted marine services.
- Follow up suppliers related to data deliverables, ensuring completeness and quality of GIS inputs.
- Participate in progress and other meetings with the client, presenting and explaining GIS‑related information when required.
- Contribute to Safe Job Analyses, HAZOPs, FMEAs and similar risk assessments as required in the project.
Offshore Operations Support
- Deliver accurate route information and ensure access to the GIS project for Operations Managers during cable laying, trenching, rock installation and other marine operations.
- May take offshore supervision roles in route survey or other operations when required (resources to be coordinated by the Discipline Manager Survey/GIS).
- Perform QC onshore and follow up on data received from offshore campaigns to ensure integrity and consistency of project GIS data.
YOUR STARTING POINT
The best candidates may not meet every requirement, but the following background will help you succeed:
- Experience with GIS tools and data management, ideally in marine, offshore, energy or infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with survey data, route definition and marine operations is a strong advantage.
- Ability to work closely with engineers, operations teams and suppliers to translate project needs into robust GIS solutions.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work.
- Good communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary, international teams.
- Structured, proactive and solution‑oriented mindset, with a strong focus on safety and quality.

- Take full ownership of the GIS engineering scope in assigned projects.
- Ensure that marine engineering work is carried out in accordance with the contract and Nexans standards/experience.
- Provide reliable, accurate and accessible route and geographical data to support safe and efficient marine operations.
