Love cricket? Want a job where you can be outdoors, learn new skills, and build a career in sport?
Rotorua Lakes Council is looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Cricket Groundsman to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a school leaver who has played cricket and wants to turn their passion for the game into a rewarding career.
You'll work alongside experienced grounds professionals, learning how to prepare and maintain cricket wickets, outfields, and sports grounds to a high standard. No previous groundskeeping experience is required. We'll provide training, support, and the opportunity to gain industry qualifications while earning and learning at the same time.
As part of your apprenticeship, you'll develop practical skills in cricket pitch preparation, mowing, rolling, irrigation, turf care, and operating specialist grounds maintenance equipment. You'll also learn how weather, soil conditions, and surface preparation can impact the game, helping you understand what players need from a quality cricket wicket.
Your cricket knowledge and playing experience will be a real advantage, as you'll bring a player's perspective to the role and develop an appreciation for the playing conditions required by batters, bowlers, and wicketkeepers.
During the cricket off-season, you'll help maintain community sports fields and Rotorua International Stadium, supporting a range of sporting codes and events. This will give you valuable experience across all aspects of sports turf and grounds maintenance.
We're looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, isn't afraid of hard work, and is keen to learn. You should be reliable, motivated, physically fit, and have a positive attitude. Most importantly, you'll have a genuine passion for cricket and a desire to build a long-term career in the sports turf industry.
This is more than just a job. It's an opportunity to gain a qualification, learn from experienced professionals, and start a career with strong future prospects. Successful apprentices can progress into qualified Cricket Groundsman, Sports Turf Specialist, and Sports Turf Management roles.
If you're ready to get off the sidelines and play your part behind the scenes in creating great cricket experiences, we'd love to hear from you.
