Unit Catering Supervisor – Wheatley Lane Primary School
Good school meals rely on a well-organised kitchen and a team that works together. As Unit Catering Supervisor at Wheatley Lane Primary School, you will lead the day-to-day service while remaining actively involved in preparing, cooking and serving meals.
Lancashire County Council’s School Catering Service provides more than 60,000 meals each day across over 500 schools. You will play an important part in helping this service run smoothly.
About the role
This is a hands-on supervisory role. You will organise the team’s work, provide direction during busy periods and help ensure meals are prepared and served in line with agreed menus and production plans.
You will also order supplies, store deliveries and maintain records and stock control. You will need to balance practical kitchen work with responsibility for keeping the service organised.
Your leadership will help the team provide high-quality, healthy and balanced meals for pupils each day.
A typical shift will involve:
- Organising the daily work of the catering team and supervising colleagues.
- Preparing, cooking and serving food and drinks.
- Making sure agreed menus and production plans are followed.
- Ordering supplies and safely storing deliveries.
- Maintaining accurate records and monitoring stock levels.
- Helping the kitchen operate safely and efficiently throughout the service.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is reliable, organised and ready to take responsibility.
- Is confident providing clear direction and support to colleagues.
- Can remain calm and work efficiently during busy periods.
- Can manage priorities and use their own initiative when needed.
- Ideally has a recognised catering qualification and/or food hygiene certificate.
- Ideally has experience of catering for large numbers.

This position is part time and term time only, please note the salary quoted is full time equivalent, the salary received will be paid on a pro – rata basis

The Government has confirmed that local government across Lancashire will be reorganised, with the current 15 councils being replaced by four new unitary councils covering North, South, East and West Lancashire from April 2028.
If you are successful in your application, you will initially join Lancashire County Council. However, as part of the planned transition, your employment will transfer to one of the new unitary councils from April 2028, subject to the implementation of the reorganisation and relevant employment legislation.
