Advanced Embedded Engineer

This position is for a Advanced Embedded Software Engineer within the Communication, Navigation & Surveillance (CNS) Center of Excellence, Honeywell Aerospace India Private Limited. The role requires strong embedded software expertise combined with the ability to understand end-to-end system behavior, perform system-level integration, and validate software performance across radar system interfaces and test environments.

As a Senior Advanced Embedded Software Engineer – CNS Radar, you will play a key technical role in software design, implementation, integration, verification, and certification support for CNS Radar products. You will be expected to understand radar system behavior at functional, interface, timing, fault-handling, and performance levels, and translate that understanding into robust embedded software solutions.

This role requires close collaboration with systems, hardware, software verification, integration, and program teams to integrate software on target hardware, analyze system responses, troubleshoot interface issues, and support formal and informal system testing. You will work on product enhancements, sustaining engineering, modernization initiatives, and next-generation radar capabilities from the Hyderabad, India location.

In this role, you will influence product quality, reliability, maintainability, and performance by applying strong embedded software engineering practices, system-level thinking, disciplined debugging, and effective collaboration across global engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to embedded software design, development, debugging, integration, and testing for CNS Radar systems.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of system behavior, including radar operating modes, state transitions, timing behavior, data flow, interface interactions, fault detection, fault isolation, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Analyze system and software requirements and translate them into high-quality high-level requirements, low-level requirements, architecture, detailed design, code, and verification artifacts.
  • Perform system-level software integration on target hardware, engineering benches, system integration labs, and simulation environments.
  • Support system testing by defining test scenarios, executing test procedures, analyzing logs, comparing expected versus actual system responses, and driving closure of software or interface-related anomalies.
  • Debug complex issues across software, hardware, firmware, interfaces, timing, protocol behavior, configuration, and test setup boundaries.
  • Work with avionics and embedded interfaces such as Ethernet, ARINC 429, RS-232, A615A data loading, discrete I/O, serial interfaces, and related communication protocols.
  • Use system test and engineering tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, bus analyzers, debuggers, emulators, data loaders, simulators, MATLAB-based analysis utilities, and lab automation scripts.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, software verification, product engineering, and program teams to ensure software readiness, interface compatibility, and end-to-end system performance.
  • Drive software lifecycle activities in alignment with aerospace processes, including requirements traceability, reviews, configuration management, verification readiness, problem report resolution, and certification support.
  • Mentor junior engineers in embedded software design, system debugging, integration methods, test discipline, and engineering best practices.

You Must Have

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 9+ years of professional experience in embedded software development, preferably in aerospace, avionics, radar, defense, or other safety-critical domains.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in C and C++ programming, embedded software architecture, firmware development, low-level debugging, memory management, interrupt handling, and target-based integration.
  • Proven ability to understand system behavior from requirements, architecture, design documents, interface control documents, timing diagrams, logs, lab observations, and test results.
  • Experience performing system-level integration and troubleshooting on real target hardware, engineering benches, system integration labs, simulators, and hardware-software integration environments.
  • Hands-on experience with system testing activities, including test setup readiness, test procedure execution, log capture, data analysis, defect isolation, root cause analysis, and regression testing.
  • Experience with embedded or avionics interfaces such as Ethernet, ARINC 429, RS-232, serial interfaces, A615A data loading, discrete I/O, and related communication protocols.
  • Working knowledge of system test tools such as protocol analyzers, bus analyzers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, emulators, data loaders, simulators, MATLAB, Python scripts, lab automation tools, and configuration utilities.
  • Experience developing embedded software requirements, including high-level software requirements and low-level software requirements, with strong awareness of requirement-to-test traceability.
  • Working knowledge of software development lifecycle processes; DO-178B/C experience or exposure is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, debugging, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across global, cross-functional engineering teams.

We Value

  • Deep understanding of radar software behavior, radar operating modes, Built-In Test behavior, fault handling, interface sequencing, timing constraints, and performance monitoring.
  • Experience working with system requirements, interface control documents, design descriptions, integration procedures, test procedures, test reports, and problem report workflows.
  • Ability to work with DOORS or similar requirements management tools and maintain complete requirement-to-design-to-code-to-test traceability.
  • Exposure to configuration management and collaboration tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket, Git, ClearCase, ClearQuest, Jenkins, Bamboo, or equivalent toolchains.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems, multithreading, multicore processing, device drivers, boot software, board support packages, hardware abstraction layers, or low-level embedded software.
  • Experience building or using automated system test frameworks, lab automation scripts, hardware-in-the-loop setups, software-in-the-loop setups, simulators, stubs, drivers, and test harnesses.
  • Strong capability to investigate field, lab, and integration issues by correlating software logs, interface captures, system states, timing traces, and test observations.
