Examples of duties
- Assists an assigned crew; ensures the crew has adequate supplies to complete the assignment.
- Transports vehicles to the city shop for routine maintenance and services as needed.
- Performs concrete and asphalt repair of public roadways, parking lots, curbs and sidewalks.
- Maintains storm drainage systems.
- Estimates cost of repairs; selects and requisitions necessary equipment and related supplies; oversees all work in progress to ensure quality, timeliness, and safety; inspects completed work to ensure quality.
- Provides maintenance and repair work and supervises a small work crew; assigns, reviews, and inspects work; guides task performance; trains and develops employees; provides input to employee performance appraisals; promotes and observes safe work practices.
- Performs general maintenance duties; cleans debris from ditches; mows ditches with line trimmers, loads debris onto trucks, picks up litter, blows leaves.
- Cleans and maintains stormwater facilities, including mowing grass, removing litter, repairing fences and other equipment.
- Responds to emergencies after hours and on weekends.
- Serves as a member of the Critical Workforce during hurricanes and other natural disasters.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; less than one year of related maintenance experience necessary.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must have an acceptable driving history.
May require the following certifications/licenses: Confined Space Safety Certification
ICS100 and ICS700
Bloodborne Pathogens
Traffic control flagging certification.
Supplemental information

MINIMUM STANDARDS:
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The Supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the performance of traffic maintenance duties. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency and safety of city roadways.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
