Position Description

Kibali Gold Mine seeks to recruit a Project Control & Instrumentation Engineer for the ARK Project (Feasibility Study). The Project Control & Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible to provide professional control and instrumentation (C&I) engineering design and project management services for the feasibility study of the project, working closely with the Project Power Engineer who leads the electrical and power-supply scope.

You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.

Duties & Responsibilities

Engineering & Feasibility Study

  • Provide C&I technical leadership and engineering support throughout the feasibility study.
  • Develop and maintain the C&I design basis, design criteria, philosophies and engineering standards for the project.
  • Define the C&I scope of work, battery limits, interfaces and technical deliverables for the project.
  • Prepare engineering analyses, calculations, specifications, capital and operating cost estimates for C&I equipment, systems and associated contract works.
  • Review process layouts, equipment selections and engineering designs to ensure that operability, maintainability, reliability, safety and lifecycle-cost requirements are incorporated.
  • Ensure Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) principles are incorporated into plant and equipment design.
  • Identify opportunities for value engineering and optimisation while maintaining safety, reliability, performance and project objectives.
  • Provide technical input into the project risk register and identify C&I-related technical, schedule, cost and operational risks.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP, constructability reviews, operability reviews and other project assurance activities as required.

Control, Automation & Instrumentation

  • Develop and review the control system architecture and control philosophy for the project.
  • Provide technical direction on PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, industrial communication networks and associated control-system interfaces.
  • Define control-system hardware, software, I/O and communication requirements.
  • Review and approve instrumentation philosophies, instrument indexes, datasheets, specifications and installation requirements.
  • Review P&IDs and ensure that instrumentation, control loops, alarms, interlocks and control strategies are appropriately defined.
  • Develop and/or review I/O lists, instrument schedules, control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, logic descriptions and functional specifications.
  • Ensure appropriate integration between electrical, control, instrumentation, process and mechanical systems, coordinating closely with the Project Power Engineer on electrical interfaces.
  • Provide technical input into the control aspects of motor control, VSD, MCC and process-control interfaces.
  • Ensure appropriate alarm management, interlocking, permissive and shutdown requirements are incorporated into the design.
  • Where applicable, provide technical input into functional safety, SIS, ESD and SIL-related requirements.
  • Review industrial communication and control-network requirements, including availability, redundancy, segregation and cybersecurity considerations, working closely with the AME IT/OT team.
  • Review PLC/DCS and instrumentation design for maintainability, diagnostics, spare capacity and future expansion.

Equipment Specifications & Procurement

  • Review major C&I equipment specifications, datasheets, requisitions, technical scopes and bid evaluation criteria developed by the EPCM.
  • Review supplier documentation and provide technical direction to suppliers and engineering contractors.
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations, clarification meetings and vendor negotiations.
  • Review vendor drawings, calculations, data sheets and technical documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide C&I technical input into procurement contracts and purchase orders.
  • Ensure that supplier deliverables comply with approved specifications, standards, quality requirements and project schedules.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and other equipment verification activities where required.

Project Management & Controls

  • Plan and manage C&I engineering activities, budgets, schedules and resources in accordance with the overall project execution strategy.
  • Ensure that manpower, equipment, tools, materials, engineering resources and technical information required to support the project schedule are available.
  • Monitor engineering progress, quality, cost and schedule performance and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Coordinate C&I interfaces with electrical (Power Engineer), process, mechanical, mining, civil/structural, metallurgy, water, infrastructure, procurement and other project disciplines.
  • Support preparation and review of project business cases and applications for capital expenditure.
  • Prepare and review C&I capital and operating cost estimates appropriate to the feasibility-study level of accuracy.
  • Maintain appropriate engineering documentation, registers, calculations and design records.

Operational Readiness, Reliability & Maintenance

  • Support development of maintenance strategies, equipment criticality assessments, critical spares requirements and operational readiness plans.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of critical C&I spares and verify the availability of common spares.
  • Develop and drive a common spares strategy to maximise standardisation and interchangeability between existing operations and the expansion project.
  • Ensure maintainability, accessibility, redundancy and lifecycle-cost considerations are incorporated into equipment selection and design.
  • Support development of commissioning, start-up, handover and operational readiness requirements.
  • Provide technical input into maintenance strategies, reliability-centred maintenance and equipment performance requirements.

Brownfield Integration & Existing Infrastructure

  • Assess existing site control and instrumentation infrastructure and identify modifications, upgrades and interfaces required for the project.
  • Identify brownfield constraints, tie-in requirements, shutdown requirements and potential operational impacts.
  • Ensure that modifications to existing infrastructure maintain safe and reliable operation of the existing plant.
  • Identify opportunities to standardise equipment, systems, controls and instrumentation between existing operations and the ARK Project.

Safety, Sustainability & Continuous Improvement

  • Demonstrate visible leadership in health and safety and ensure that C&I engineering activities comply with Barrick's safety standards and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, maintainability and lifecycle cost through technology and engineering best practices.
  • Ensure energy efficiency and sustainability considerations are incorporated into C&I design and equipment selection.
  • Consider opportunities for automation, digitalisation, remote monitoring and advanced control technologies that can improve safety, productivity and equipment availability.
  • Stay abreast of developments in automation, instrumentation and digital technologies and assess their application to the operation to reduce cost, increase uptime and improve safety.
  • Promote engineering solutions that are practical, maintainable and fit for purpose for the Kibali operating environment.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Control Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer registration or equivalent professional qualification/recognition is beneficial, subject to applicable jurisdictional requirements.
  • Additional qualifications in instrumentation, automation, control systems or project management would be advantageous.

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years' relevant experience in control and instrumentation engineering, preferably within mining, minerals processing, heavy industry or other complex industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering feasibility studies, pre-feasibility studies, detailed engineering or major brownfield/greenfield projects.
  • Experience in mining or mineral-processing projects is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with PLC/DCS/SCADA systems and industrial automation.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming is advantageous and ability to review control-system design.
  • Experience with instrumentation selection, specification, loop design, control valves, process measurement and instrumentation installation.
  • Experience interpreting and reviewing P&IDs, control narratives and cause-and-effect diagrams.
  • Experience with instrumentation and control design software and engineering document-management systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable IEC, IEEE, NFPA and/or other relevant international control and instrumentation standards.
  • Knowledge of hazardous-area requirements and industrial control-system safety principles.
  • Experience with equipment specifications, technical procurement, vendor document reviews and technical bid evaluations.
  • Experience preparing CAPEX/OPEX estimates and supporting project business cases.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams and EPC/EPCM contractors.
  • Experience with commissioning, FAT/SAT, operational readiness or project handover would be advantageous.
  • Strong project planning, organisational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder-management and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound engineering decisions based on incomplete or evolving information.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, multicultural environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with control and instrumentation equipment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote mining environment and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, integrity and operational excellence.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French would be advantageous for the DRC operating environment.
