Summary

Under general supervision, the Meter Serviceman 2nd Class is responsible for disconnecting and reconnecting electric and water service in accordance with established Authority policies, procedures, and safety regulations. The employee performs inspection, maintenance, and servicing of electric meters and related equipment to ensure the accurate measurement of electrical consumption and the reliability of metering systems.

The incumbent conducts routine and preventive maintenance on meters, identifies and reports defective, damaged, or tampered metering equipment, and assists in ensuring that metering devices operate efficiently and accurately. The position requires field work in various environmental conditions, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work independently while maintaining positive interactions with customers and other Authority personnel.

During emergencies, staffing shortages, or other operational needs, the incumbent may be required to assist with meter reading activities and other related field assignments to support utility operations.

Examples of duties

  • Installs meters for new customers; removes jumpers from meter bases
  • Takes readings on meter dials before installing and disconnecting service and removing meters
  • Reconnects service for customers who have paid bills after service was disconnected
  • Checks meters to ensure that they are in good condition and makes minor repairs and adjustments to meters
  • Checks meters to detect illegal connections and reports findings to supervisors
  • Wires current and potential transformers; tests meter for accuracy using test equipment
  • Safely operate a company assigned vehicle

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the geography and street locations
  • Knowledge of basic electricity and formulas
  • Knowledge of the Authority's rules and regulations for electric service
  • Knowledge of the use of instrument transformers and their application in metering
  • Ability to read and follow simple wiring diagrams
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public
  • Ability to calculate simple load requirements for service installation
  • Valid Virgin Islands drivers license

Supplemental information

High school diploma including or supplemented by courses in the electrical trades and one year of experience in electrical meter service work.
