St. George’s University invites applicants for the position of Mechanic within the Transportation Department

Job Description

Objective

The Transportation department Mechanic plays a critical part in the general maintenance and upkeep of all SGU vehicles. The mechanic should be prepared to service a diverse fleet of vehicles, including new and older buses, light trucks, and an assortment of motorized carts/buggies.

Essential Functions

• Troubleshoot and rectify technical problems in the maintenance and repair of SGU’s automotive fleet and small mechanical equipment.
• Service and repair small engines on equipment used in other departments.
• Performs administrative duties associated with work orders.
• Inspects and service automobiles, trucks and other equipment.
• Changes and repairs tires and respond to road service calls.
• Troubleshoots and repairs electrical controls and motors.
• Inspects suspension and exhaust systems and makes repairs.
• Overhaul and replace major drive chain components such as engines, transmissions, Axles, etc.
• Communicates with various vendors to obtain quotes for parts and supplies.
• Maintains an inventory of items for routine and emergency repairs.
• Maintain vehicle files and repair records as directed.
• Communicates with staff to maintain an effective working relationship.
• Responds to after-hour emergencies as requested by the supervisors.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the transportation manager/Supervisor.

Essential Knowledge, Skills& Abilities

• Must possess an understanding of health and safety regulations in the workplace.
• Competent in the handling and operating of air and hydraulic equipment.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to understand and follow through on oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and interact with students, faculty and staff in a positive.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 3 years of practical mechanical experience at a reputable garage or service center.
• Formal certification in general mechanics from a recognized training establishment.
• A valid D & C-1 driver’s license for Grenada and capable of operating SGU Buses and trucks

Work Environment/Physical Demands

• Duties may be performed in tight, dirty and dark spaces.
• The environment may be noisy
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds in weight

Hours and Travel

• A typical work week is 40 hours. Monday through Friday 8am to 3.30pm, with 1 hour's lunch break
• Overtime work will be as required
• No travel is expected in this role
