Opportunity for impact

Newfire is seeking a Data Architect

What's the Project?
Our client is a well-established company in the luxury retail industry undergoing a significant technology transformation. Newfire is taking ownership of the client's engineering ecosystem, including its core e-commerce platform, multiple online storefronts, and ERP integrations, with the goal of modernizing the platform and dramatically accelerating software delivery.

As part of this engagement, we're building a team of experienced engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, improving large production systems, and working through real-world technical debt. This is not a greenfield project—it's an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by increasing reliability, scalability, and development velocity across a business-critical platform.

About the Role

The Data Architect will own the data engineering workstream, responsible for the pipelines that synchronize ERP and business data, support the client's data warehouse, help build the company's analytics capabilities, and work closely with the client stakeholders to prioritize the highest impact work. In addition, the Data Architect will work closely with the Software Architect to ensure that the data and engineering strategies reinforce each other and create a stable system. Because this area has limited documentation, we're looking for someone who is proactive, self-directed, and comfortable taking ownership while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams.

Your day-to-day activities:

  • Own and define the backend data architecture and reliable data pipelines connecting ERP systems, business applications, and the data platform.
  • Lead the data engineering workstream and drive technical decisions for data architecture and platform reliability.
  • Map data flows, dependencies, and interactions between systems across the Customer’s technology landscape.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure data is accurately synchronized across multiple systems.
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and recovery mechanisms to improve pipeline reliability.
  • Help rebuild the company's analytics capabilities by enabling high-quality, trustworthy data.
  • Improve existing data infrastructure while reducing technical debt and increasing maintainability.
  • Participate in Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable data solutions.
  • Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Take ownership of the overall quality, stability, and long-term evolution of the data platform.

You’re a perfect match if you have:

  • Data Engineering Expertise: 7+ years of professional experience designing, building, and maintaining production-grade data platforms and ETL pipelines. This includes creating and maintaining clear data definitions, data governance processes, and related functions to create a high performing data team producing high quality data products.
  • Advanced SQL: Expert-level SQL skills with experience optimizing complex queries and handling large datasets.
  • Production ETL Pipelines: Hands-on experience designing and operating reliable ETL/data synchronization pipelines, including monitoring, alerting, failure recovery, and operational excellence.
  • Snowflake & PostgreSQL: Strong experience designing schemas, optimizing performance, and working with Snowflake and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Programming: Professional experience working with Java or Python codebases.
  • Self-Driven Mindset: Comfortable working with limited documentation, taking ownership of ambiguous problems, and driving technical decisions independently.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent collaboration skills to effectively work with Engineering, Product, and other cross-functional teams to create a stable technical ecosystem.
  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to improve existing systems while balancing technical debt, scalability, and business priorities.
  • Experience implementing or supporting BI and analytics platforms.
  • As a Senior team member, you will be expected to actively participate in our hiring processes by serving on interview panels for future roles across the company

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience building or maintaining Kafka or other streaming data pipelines.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch.
  • Previous experience working with e-commerce, ERP, or retail data domains.
  • Experience inheriting and modernizing legacy data platforms.

Please note that employment will be contingent upon providing documentation verifying your legal work authorization in the country of residence, in accordance with applicable law.
