Description & Requirements

Bloomberg’s core product, the Bloomberg Terminal, is used by over 400,000 financial professionals worldwide. It's continuously being developed and improved by approximately 9,000 engineers who are experts in their respective domains. Those engineers share a common need: to efficiently debug complex software written in multiple languages and deployed across diverse platforms — from on-premises infrastructure to the public cloud.

The Runtime Diagnostics team builds the applications, APIs, and platform that power an intuitive, semi-automated debugging workflow used by thousands of those engineers daily. We develop high-performance services that provide deep telemetry and observability at runtime in production. In short, this team defines the debugging experience at Bloomberg.

What’s in it for you?

This is a unique opportunity to shape a product suite from its early stages within a newly formed team. You'll design and develop full-stack solutions using modern, high-performance technologies and distributed computing frameworks to build a seamless debugging platform. Your work will span from low-level systems tinkering to delivering polished, high-level developer tools — and the end-user applications you build will often emerge from that deeper exploration.

Through collaboration with a diverse range of engineering teams across Bloomberg, you'll gain broad exposure to the company's development workflows, architectures, and infrastructure — expanding your technical breadth while deepening your systems expertise.

We’ll trust you to:

  • Design and implement high-performance services and APIs in C++, Python, Go and other languages as needed

  • Build and evolve HTTP services accessed via Web APIs that serve thousands of internal engineers

  • Drive the development of infrastructure with integrated diagnostic tooling across Bloomberg’s engineering ecosystem

  • Collaborate with end-users from diverse teams to understand their debugging workflows and translate those needs into product features

  • Drive architectural decisions that balance performance and usability at scale

  • Apply AI capabilities judiciously — both as a development tool and as a complementary feature within the products you build

You'll need to have:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field — or demonstrated equivalent professional experience

  • Demonstrated experience developing high-quality, scalable applications in C++, Java, or Go, with an aptitude to learn new languages as needed

  • Proficiency in system design and architecture, with a commitment to best-practices SDLC including automated testing and CI/CD

  • A willingness to collaborate with teams across the organisation on integrations and shared tooling

  • A motivation for staying current with industry trends, including open-source debugging infrastructure and developer tools

We'd love to see:

  • Experience with containerized environments, cgroups, and Linux namespaces

  • Hands-on debugging expertise with GDB, proc tools, and other Linux diagnostic utilities

  • Knowledge of the Linux process model, proc filesystem, binary analysis, and ELF internals

  • Experience with Unix IPC, secure network programming, and concurrent/parallel programming

  • A passion for designing intuitive developer workflows and user experiences

  • Familiarity with secure and effective use of AI, both as a development tool and as an

implementation detail in products

If indicated, please note that years of experience are a guide; we will consider applications from all candidates who can demonstrate the skills necessary for the role.
