Chief I Respiratory Physiologist

Full-time (35 hours per week) |

The Purpose of This Role:

To strategically and operationally manage and develop Respiratory and sleep services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve Hospital objectives. Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications:

Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Dublin Institute of Technology

or

Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin)

or

Possess an equivalent relevant scientific qualification (Level 8) as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science (IICMS)

or

(a) Possess the Certificate in Medical Physics & Physiological Measurement (MPPM) from Dublin Institute of Technology

or

(b) An equivalent scientific qualification as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science awarded in or before 2005 (See Note 1*)

Key Responsibilities:

  • The person holding this post is required to support the principle that the care of the patient comes first at all times and will approach their work with the flexibility and enthusiasm necessary to make this principle a reality for every patient to the greatest possible degree.
  • Manage the department by providing strategic, operational and clinical leadership, which results in the delivery of effective, efficient and patient centred Respiratory service.
  • Lead, manage and motivate the Respiratory and Sleep team, ensuring optimum and effective use of staff and delegating responsibility and accountability as appropriate
  • Develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, and set and monitor standards of practice
  • Advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement and upgrading
  • Keep the Business Partner, Operations Officer, Respiratory Consultants and appropriate Heads of Department appraised of any significant development within your area of responsibility.
  • Formulate policies and selection, introduction and development of information and other systems for co-ordination of data collection, communication and management.
  • Ensure that modern standards of clinical care are in operation and that regular monitoring is undertaken.
  • Conduct the assigned respiratory and sleep tests to a high standard of safety adhering to departmental policies at all times.
  • Conduct routine calibration, quality control and preventative maintenance
  • Ensure staff are allocated to manage sleep tests and CPAP management
  • Perform audits of the service, where required and be involved in quality improvement projects within the service
  • Manage the orientation of new staff members and participate in and conduct performance review and development of assigned staff.
  • Participate in the preparation of plans for the service and monitor report on their implementation as required.
  • Prepare annual financial estimates in respect of pay and non-pay resources and ensure expenditure is controlled within budget and identify potential for efficiency saving through improved practices and innovation.
  • Be aware of risks to patients and staff and follow the correct hospital procedure for reporting and documenting each incident, whilst being fully aware of the legal requirements and implications.
  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams within the Hospital, to improve processes and practices and to identify areas for quality improvement with regard to maintaining Hospital Accreditation.
  • Monitor students in the department, guiding and teaching or, allocating a senior member of staff for this task
  • Comply with Health and Safety Regulations, ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment.
  • Develop departmental protocols, diagnostic testing, history taking, interpretation and analysis.
  • Be responsible for the efficient organisation and administration of the department to ensure resources are utilised effectively and efficiently.
  • Be directly responsible to the hospital management for the day to day running of the department
  • Primarily responsible for the maintenance, management and quality of patient reports and scheduling. This may involve prioritising appointments based on clinical need.
  • Work with the Consultant in the developing and carrying out of audits including patient outcomes, peer review, test reports, equipment hygiene etc.
  • Work closely with clinicians and other physiologists to develop and implement evidence-based protocols.
  • Primarily responsible for the supervision and line management of other physiologists working in the department including personal development training, staff performance, conflict resolution and training need analysis.
  • Undertake administration duties including stock control
  • Liaise with physicians and medical teams, when appropriate, regarding patient testing and departmental protocols
  • Responsible for the supervision and training of basic grade physiologist staff and student physiologists working in the department.
  • Engage in performance management and personal development

Essential Requirements:

  • At least 5 years post registration experience.
  • Suitable management experience and /or qualification desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, accountability and communication skills
  • The ability to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level.

  • Roster will generally be over 5 days a week however a flexible approach to work patterns is required in line with service.
