Te Tūranga | About the role

Are you an experienced building inspector who enjoys sharing your knowledge, supporting others, and helping ensure safe, compliant building outcomes for the community?

We’re looking for a skilled and experienced Senior Building Control Officer – Inspections to join our Building Services team. This is a great opportunity to take the next step in your building control career, providing specialist technical advice, supporting the development of team capability, and helping ensure building work across Tauranga meets the requirements of the Building Act, Building Code and relevant regulations.

In this role, you’ll carry out and support the delivery of building inspections, provide clear and practical advice to customers and industry professionals, and help the team make consistent, well-informed decisions. You’ll also play a key role in supporting quality systems, continuous improvement, and maintaining BCA accreditation.

What you’ll be doing

• Carrying out building inspections in line with legislative and regulatory requirements
• Providing specialist technical advice to customers, industry professionals and the wider team
• Supporting the development and maintenance of team competency
• Helping ensure inspection decisions are clear, consistent and well documented
• Contributing to quality systems, process improvement and BCA accreditation requirements
• Building positive relationships with customers, contractors and key industry partners

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

We’re looking for someone who has strong technical building knowledge, sound judgement, and the confidence to support others with complex inspection or compliance matters.

You’ll bring:

• A tertiary qualification in a building-related field, as required under the Building Control Authority Regulations
• Competency in Residential 1, 2 and 3 and/or Commercial 1 and 2 building projects
• Proven experience across a wide range of building projects
• At least five years’ experience working within a New Zealand Building Consent Authority
• Strong working knowledge of the Building Act 2004, Building Code and relevant regulations
• Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information in a practical and helpful way
• A customer-focused approach and a commitment to supporting safe, compliant building outcomes
