About the Opportunity
We are recruiting an experienced Surfacing Operator to join our Nelson team. This permanent role is suited to a reliable operator who takes pride in delivering high-quality road surfacing and maintenance works. You will work as part of a civil construction crew, operating surfacing plant and equipment to support resealing, chipseal, asphalt and other pavement treatment programmes across the Nelson region.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate surfacing plant and associated equipment safely and efficiently, including but not limited to pavers, asphalt rollers, chip spreaders, broom/sweeper trucks and bitumen sprayers.
- Carry out routine plant checks, basic maintenance and cleaning to ensure equipment is safe and fit for purpose; report defects promptly to supervisors.
- Coordinate with the site team, contractors and clients to ensure efficient workflow, correct material application and consistent quality control.
- Adhere to all health, safety and environmental policies, participate in site inductions, and contribute to a positive safety culture on site.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience operating surfacing plant or relevant civil construction equipment on road projects.
- Relevant plant tickets or NZQA qualifications for surfacing plant operation would be an advantage.
- Experience working to specification for chipseal, reseal or asphalt applications, including an understanding of materials and application techniques.
- Knowledge of NZ health and safety legislation and safe work practices in road construction environments.
- Good communication and teamwork skills with the ability to liaise professionally with supervisors, subcontractors and the public.
- New Zealand driver’s licence (Class 2 or higher advantageous) and the legal right to work in New Zealand.
