Senior Patient Accounts Specialist

Under the direction of the Director or Manager, Patient Accounts, performs functions involved in the billing and collection of hospital receivables, customer service duties, the processing and reconciliation of various charge-entry, edit and error reports. Has a diverse knowledge of Patient Accounts follow up techniques and is familiar with a wide variety of payers, such as Managed Care, Self Pay, and Auto. Is consistent, dependable and accurate in carrying out responsibilities to a successful conclusion. Clearly understands purpose, objectives practices and procedures of the department. Performs other tasks that may be assigned by the Manager. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission, vision and values of Tampa General Healthcare.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs hospital billing and collections activities for assigned accounts in accordance with payer requirements and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Processes and reconciles charge‑entry, edit, and error reports to ensure accurate, timely claim submission and follow‑up.
  • Follows up on unpaid or underpaid Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care, Self‑Pay, and Auto claims to support timely reimbursement.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and applies contractual adjustments in compliance with payer contracts and regulatory guidelines.
  • Communicates directly with Medicare and Medicaid fiscal intermediaries, insurance carriers, and other payers to resolve claim issues.
  • Provides professional, courteous customer service to patients and payers regarding billing inquiries, balances, and payment options.
  • Identifies issues impacting cash flow, documents findings, and reports trends or concerns to leadership as part of performance improvement efforts.
  • Utilizes electronic billing systems and available resources efficiently to manage workload and meet productivity and quality expectations.
  • Assists with training and mentoring new team members and provides feedback to management regarding progress and development needs.
  • Performs all duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Healthcare while promoting teamwork, accountability, and service excellence.

Qualifications

  • Highschool Diploma or GED required.
  • Three (3) years of Hospital experience in billing and collecting Medicare/Medicaid; working knowledge of Federal, State and County guidelines as it relates to billing; and knowledge of electronic billing systems.
