Laboratory Analyst - Technical

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Analyst - Technical to join the team in Rustenburg. The individual will be responsible for providing the day-to-day technical and quality support to the Rustenburg Laboratory in order to meet the overall objectives of Analytical Services within Alfred H Knight South Africa, and for production of results to a high degree of precision and accuracy and ensuring that an effective and high quality analytical service is provided.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

To be successful at Alfred H. Knight, the incumbent will need to display the following:

In this role you will be responsible to

  • Ensure at all times that a high degree of accuracy and precision is applied to methods and procedures through incorporating and promoting good laboratory practice principles

  • Responsible for ensuring that work throughput is followed in accordance with documented methods and procedures. It is the incumbent's responsibility to inform the Laboratory Technical Manager of any failure in compliance with documented methods

  • Workload that is assigned to the post holder is effectively managed through the most cost-effective utilization of time and resources

  • Control and monitoring of stock levels, with the assistance of Shift Laboratory Analysts, to ensure all critical chemicals, consumables, and equipment spares are readily available and minimum quantities are kept in stock to avoid shortages, which can cause delays in routine analysis

  • Preparation and Verification of ICP Calibration and Internal Standards

  • Ensure that all environmental conditions are adhered to in all sections

  • Assist the senior analyst and laboratory chemist with instrument troubleshooting

  • Oversee that all the equipment verifications and daily maintenance are done timely as required, and any deviations are attended to or brought to the attention of the Laboratory Technical Manager

  • Ensuring that the equipment calibration schedule is updated and ensuring that faulty equipment is brought to the attention of the Laboratory Technical Manager immediately

  • Ensure that ICP equipment breakdowns are recorded on the control spreadsheet with all relevant information available

  • Test and monitor the scrubber pH as required

  • Assisting the Laboratory Technical Manager with updating the employees' training schedule, and maintain training records

  • Ensure the QC monitoring is done timely as required

  • Ensure that PT samples are registered and analyzed on time and monthly z-score charts are updated

  • Analysis of samples as per the current scope of work by titration and ICP-OES for production samples and validation work

  • Maintaining records and laboratory data such that work is clearly and easily auditable and traceable

  • Review and authorization of analytical results on Lab Create as required

  • Ensuring that all laboratory work areas and workstations are kept clean and tidy - Housekeeping

  • Observing and complying with operational requirements and safety regulations applicable to his/her work area. Non-compliance will be considered to be serious misconduct, and the employer is hereby indemnified by the employee towards any liability resulting from an injury or illness as a result of non-compliance with safety measures

Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science
  • Diploma in Analytical Chemistry

Required work experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an Analytical Laboratory
