Project Electrical Control & Instrumentation Engineer - Non-Process Infrastructure

Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly committed employee for the position of Project Electrical Control & Instrumentation Engineer – Non-Process Infrastructure - LEP (Fixed Term) to join the versatile the Lumwana Expansion Department under Project Engineering. The Lumwana Expansion Project has transitioned from feasibility and detailed engineering into execution, with this role focused on construction, commissioning, operational readiness and handover through project completion. Reporting to the Lead Electrical Control & Instrumentation Engineer - LEP, the Project EC&I Engineer - Non-Process Infrastructure will form part of the Owner’s Project Team and take technical ownership of EC&I execution works across LEP non-process and remote infrastructure from construction through energization, commissioning and operational handover. The role covers 33 kV overhead-line networks and OPGW communications, open-pit mine dewatering, Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) booster pump stations and remote substations, camp 11 kV infrastructure including mini-substations, LV distribution and generator plants, and electrical infrastructure associated with RAP housing projects. The role requires strong field construction leadership across geographically dispersed work fronts, as well as effective coordination of power, communications, civil, and operational interfaces.

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide Owner’s technical oversight of non-process electrical construction and ensure compliance with IFC drawings, approved specifications, project standards, procedures and applicable codes.
  • Take execution ownership of 33 kV overhead-line networks, including poles/structures, conductors, insulators, earthing, switching, protection, metering, testing and energization.
  • Oversee OPGW and associated fibre/communications infrastructure required to establish reliable remote network connectivity, including interfaces to substations, telecoms and control systems.
  • Coordinate construction and commissioning of remote substations and associated 33 kV, 11 kV and LV distribution infrastructure.
  • Provide electrical execution oversight for open-pit mine dewatering systems, including remote pumping installations, power distribution, substations and associated control/communications interfaces.
  • Provide electrical execution oversight for Tailings Storage Facility infrastructure, including booster pump stations, remote substations, distribution systems and remote control/telemetry interfaces.
  • Oversee camp electrical infrastructure, including 11 kV networks, mini-substations, LV distribution and associated protection and earthing systems.
  • Oversee generator plants and standby/emergency generation systems, including controls, changeover/synchronization arrangements where applicable, testing and integration with local electrical networks.Provide technical oversight of electrical infrastructure associated with RAP housing developments, including distribution, mini-substations, metering, street/area supplies and interfaces with civil works and utilities as applicable.
  • Manage interfaces between electrical works and roads, earthworks, drainage, water infrastructure, structures, telecommunications, access routes, wayleaves and other enabling works.
  • Coordinate route, access and construction interfaces for geographically dispersed OHL and remote facility work fronts and proactively resolve constraints affecting productivity.
  • Review and resolve RFIs, technical queries, design clarifications, site instructions, constructability issues and field changes in a timely manner.
  • Manage interfaces between EPCM teams, OHL and electrical contractors, OEMs/vendors, mining teams, TSF teams, camp teams, Operations, Maintenance and other project disciplines.
  • Review contractor look-ahead schedules, work packs, manpower forecasts, methodologies, equipment and construction readiness; identify constraints and support recovery actions.
  • Provide technical oversight of ITPs, FATs, SATs, NCRs, installation inspections, test records, quality dossiers and punch-list closure.
  • Plan and coordinate isolations, switching, tie-ins and energisation of new and modified remote electrical infrastructure in collaboration with Operations and authorised switching personnel.
  • Drive testing and commissioning of protection, distribution, generator, communications and remote-control systems and verify end-to-end functionality before handover.
  • Support technical evaluation of variations, deviations, scope changes and claims, including technical, cost and schedule impacts.
  • Ensure field modifications are controlled through approved management-of-change processes and captured in red-line and final as-built documentation.
  • Support Operational Readiness including critical spares, maintenance strategies, asset data, training, vendor documentation and final turnover dossiers.
  • Drive safe completion and handover of non-process and remote electrical infrastructure to the appropriate operational owner in accordance with project acceptance requirements.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Full Grade 12 certificate.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering or an appropriately related engineering discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant electrical engineering and major capital-project execution experience, preferably in mining, utilities or heavy industrial infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated experience with MV distribution systems, overhead lines, substations and remote electrical infrastructure.

  • Practical experience with 33 kV overhead-line construction and commissioning; experience with OPGW/ fibre communications on power networks will be highly advantageous.

  • Experience with mine dewatering, pumping infrastructure, tailings facilities or other geographically distributed mining infrastructure will be advantageous.

  • Experience with 11 kV distribution, mini-substations, generator plants and camp/community infrastructure will be advantageous.

  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple remote construction work fronts and interfaces with civil, communications and operational teams.

  • Strong understanding of project schedules, construction readiness, change management, technical contract administration and project controls.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, problem-solving and stakeholder-management skills.

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in a site-based project environment and actively engage construction and commissioning teams in the field.

  • 33 kV overhead-line systems, structures, conductors, protection, switching, earthing, testing and energization. OPGW, fibre communications and remote network connectivity associated with electrical distribution systems.

  • 33 kV/11 kV remote substations, mini-substations, MV/LV distribution, protection and metering.

  • Mine dewatering and remote pumping power systems, TSF booster pump stations and associated remote electrical/control infrastructure.

  • Camp accommodation 11 kV distribution, mini-substations, standby/emergency generator plants and local network integration.

  • RAP housing electrical infrastructure and multidisciplinary interfaces with civil works, roads, water, telecoms and utilities.
