Purpose

We are currently recruiting for a Principal or Senior Principal Piping Designer to provide senior technical authority and design leadership across complex, large-scale projects. Based in Edmonton or Calgary, you will be accountable for the technical quality, constructability and consistency of piping design deliverables while leading designers and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams, clients and construction stakeholders. You will serve as a trusted technical advisor on complex piping design challenges, contribute to discipline standards and best practices, and help ensure safe, constructible and cost-effective solutions across energy, chemicals, mining and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for piping design activities on complex projects, including layout and routing, 3D model development, piping plans, isometrics, plot plans, equipment layouts and pipe support concepts.
  • Lead, mentor and develop designers, providing technical guidance and supporting discipline capability and succession planning.
  • Review and approve piping design deliverables and 3D models for technical accuracy, quality, constructability, project specifications and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish and promote piping design standards, philosophies, workflows and best practices, including model governance and effective use of digital design tools.
  • Resolve complex design issues involving congestion, operability, maintenance access, safety, constructability and multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • Coordinate with Piping Engineering, Stress, Mechanical and other disciplines to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
  • Provide technical input to project leadership and clients, including design reviews, technical alignment and resolution of high-level issues.
  • Support constructability reviews and work with construction, procurement and commissioning teams as required.
  • Provide on-site technical guidance and participate in field verification activities.
  • Champion safe design practices, lessons learned and continuous improvement across projects and the piping discipline.

What You Will Bring

  • 10+ years of piping design experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or leadership capacity.
  • Diploma or degree in Engineering Design, Mechanical/Piping Technology, Process Piping Drafting or a related discipline; relevant technical certification or equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of piping codes, standards and materials.
  • Proven experience developing and reviewing piping layouts, plot plans and equipment layouts for industrial facilities, including oil and gas, refineries, pipelines, gas processing, infrastructure, oil sands, heavy oil/SAGD, mining, power, hydrogen and/or carbon capture.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design activities, manage project priorities and deliver to deadlines.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, collaboration and mentoring skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant piping design and modelling software such as E3D, S3D, Plant 3D, CADWorx, Navisworks and/or 3D scanning technologies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to site for field verification and technical support.
