About Pacific Labour Mobility Support Program

The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme is a signature initiative for the Australian Government that enables workers from 9 Pacific Island Countries (PICs) and Timor- Leste to work in priority sectors in Australia. The Pacific Labour Mobility Support Program’s (PLMSP) role is to provide the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and governments in 9 PICs and Timor-Leste with support to enable workers to access PALM scheme in inclusive ways that maximise the benefits for the workers and national economies while minimising risks from labour mobility participation. Palladium is contracted to deliver PLMSP on behalf of DFAT.

About the Role

The Communications Coordinator – Media and Editorial will support PLMSP’s media, stakeholder engagement and communications activities in Papua New Guinea. The role will help strengthen understanding of labour mobility, support the sustainable expansion of the PALM scheme, protect the scheme’s reputation, and provide clear and timely information to labour mobility stakeholders in Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Primary Responsibilities

The Communications Coordinator – Media and Editorial will be responsible for:

• Developing and implementing a communications and awareness plan for the PNG Labour Mobility Unit and Australian High Commission
• Drafting clear, accurate and locally relevant media and engagement materials across a range of print, broadcast and digital formats including media releases, trade and industry content, backgrounders and FAQs, ministerial talking points, and digital and social media content
• Identifying communication and reputational risks and developing contextualised messages and mitigation strategies
• Working respectfully with stakeholders including the Australian High Commission, the PNG Government, the PNG Labour Mobility Unit, media, employers, workers and community groups
• Supporting the PNG Labour Mobility Unit with website content, communications planning and capability building where appropriate
• Maintaining high editorial standards through drafting, proofreading and editing, and ensuring content is accurate, respectful and culturally appropriate
• Using AI, data and technology appropriately to improve communication, coordination and content development while maintaining accuracy, integrity and good judgement

About you

We are seeking an individual who:

• Has tertiary qualifications in journalism, media, communications or a similar discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
• Brings at least four years’ relevant experience in journalism, communications, media advisory work, public relations, strategic communications or a related field
• Has exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate and audience-appropriate materials for media, government, community and public audiences
• Can exercise sound editorial judgement in a sensitive government-funded environment, including managing reputation, accuracy, consent, safeguarding and approval considerations
• Communicates respectfully and confidently with government, donor, media, worker, employer and community stakeholders
• Has an understanding of media and stakeholder environments in Papua New Guinea, the Pacific or regional Australia
• Is comfortable supporting others through coaching, practical guidance or shared communications planning
• Has strong written and spoken English and is confident using Microsoft Office software.
• Has PNG strategic communications, journalism, media or public relations experience, or the ability to quickly understand the PNG media, government and stakeholder context - this will be highly regarded
• Experience with digital, social media, website content, photo or video coordination, or Adobe Creative Suite will be well regarded but is not essential.
