Postdoctoral Researcher in Seismology and Fiber-Optic Sensing

The oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth's surface but remain largely inaccessible to seismological instrumentation. SeaLight explores the use of prototype fiber-optic sensing instruments developed by Nokia Bell Labs, based on optical interferometry, to record seismic signals on trans-oceanic subsea telecom cables. Unlike standard DAS, these new instruments work through the repeaters on long subsea cables, effectively converting each span between repeaters (50–100 km) into a strain sensor, enabling seismological observations across the full length of a cable. We have now acquired data from two deployments of the new instruments on the IRIS cable connecting Iceland and Ireland, totaling more than 17 months of observations, as well as more than 10 months of DAS data on the first span of the same cable.

The postdoc will focus on analyzing signals from the new instrument, including a systematic comparison of DAS signals and new instrument signals on the first span of the IRIS cable, where both instrument types have recorded simultaneously. The long DAS time series on the first span also provides an opportunity to study the rich variety of signals recorded in this environment. The specific scope of the work may evolve as the project develops and new data becomes available.

The postdoc will collaborate closely with the PhD student in the project as well as with other partners in the SeaLight project, including Nokia Bell Labs, International Institute for Ocean Fiber Sensing and NTNU. The project is funded by the Icelandic Research Fund (Rannsóknasjóður).

The position is funded for three years and is open now, but starting date is negotiable.

Requirements

  • PhD in seismology, geophysics, or a closely related field
  • Experience with DAS data processing and analysis
  • Experience with seismic waveform analysis
  • Proven track record of quality, independent research
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
