Oncology is one of Illumina’s key strategic areas of investment and growth. As we continue to expand our oncology portfolio and bring new solutions and technologies to the market, this position will play a crucial role in building on an already successful business and helping drive its next phase of growth across Italy and the Mediterranean region.

Illumina is seeking a highly motivated Senior Oncology Specialist to join our Mediterranean Commercial team. This is a broad commercial role combining business development, market development, customer engagement and close collaboration with Marketing and other cross-functional teams.

You will help shape and grow Illumina’s oncology business by supporting the introduction and adoption of new and existing oncology solutions and technologies, identifying emerging market opportunities, developing strategic partnerships, and strengthening our position across clinical oncology, molecular diagnostics, and translational research.

You will serve as a trusted advisor and oncology expert, working closely with customers to understand their scientific, clinical, and business needs and translate these into meaningful solutions. In partnership with Account Managers, Channel Partners, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Market Access, and other cross-functional colleagues, you will contribute to strategic account development, market creation, stakeholder engagement, and the successful commercialization of Illumina’s oncology portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced oncology commercial professional who enjoys working at the intersection of science, business development, marketing, and customer strategy, and who wants to help shape the future of precision oncology during an important period of investment and innovation at Illumina.

Location

This is a field-based position. Candidates should be based in Italy. Travel will be primarily within Italy, with occasional visits to Slovenia, Croatia, and Greece.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Oncology Specialist, you will:

  • Drive Market Growth: Achieve and exceed sales objectives for Illumina’s oncology portfolio by winning new accounts, expanding existing relationships, and positioning Illumina as the trusted partner of choice.

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and execute a solid oncology business plan with clear objectives, focusing on early adopters, strategic labs, and clinical accounts.

  • Customer Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with oncologists, molecular pathologists, laboratory directors, and key opinion leaders (KOLs).

  • Sales Collaboration: Partner with Account Managers, Sales Specialists and Channel Partners to identify opportunities, qualify leads, and close sales.

  • Technical Expertise: Confidently understand and present complex oncology workflows (NGS, liquid biopsy, companion diagnostics, biomarkers, etc.) to diverse stakeholders in clinical and research settings.

  • Training & Enablement: Educate and support Account Managers, Channel Partners, and customers with resources, commercialization plans, and product updates. Deliver impactful presentations at meetings, seminars, and symposia.

  • Pipeline Development: Build and manage a robust pipeline of oncology opportunities (short-, medium-, and long-term). Provide accurate forecasts via CRM tools.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Lead and contribute to strategic projects with Marketing, Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Market Access, and Government Affairs.

  • Voice of Customer: Gather and share customer insights to inform Illumina’s product development and marketing strategies.

  • Brand Ambassador: Represent Illumina at oncology congresses, tradeshows, and conferences in the respective territory.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; MSc/PhD in Life Sciences, Medicine, or a related field strongly preferred.

  • Preferred Experience:

  • Proven experience in a commercial, business development, market development or marketing role within oncology.

  • Demonstrated success in developing strategic accounts, creating new business opportunities, and driving growth.

  • Experience supporting the introduction or adoption of new technologies, products, or clinical solutions is highly desirable.

  • Strong technical knowledge of oncology workflows, including molecular biology, genomics, and NGS.

  • Skills:

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.

  • Ability to network across all organizational levels and develop strong, long-term relationships with customers and KOLs.

  • Strategic and entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to identify opportunities and translate market and customer insights into action.

  • Strong customer focus and ability to operate effectively in a highly cross-functional environment.

  • Ability to combine scientific understanding with commercial and market insight.

  • Languages: Fluency in Italian and English required.

  • Travel: Willingness to travel primarily within Italy, with occasional visits to Slovenia, Croatia, and Greece.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Oncology Sales Specialist – Italy role based in Italy is EUR 57.400 - 86.000. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. This salary range applies to the primary posting location listed above. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range will be updated accordingly. Compensation ranges for other locations will differ to reflect local market competitiveness and will be shared with candidates if applicable during the recruitment process. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
