Job Summary

The Regional Climate and Data Analyst supports MERIAM through the acquisition, processing and management of climate, environmental and program data, and the production of analytical outputs and acute malnutrition forecasts to support early warning and anticipatory action across the Horn and East Africa region.

Purpose: To coordinate the gathering and lead the preparation and management of climate, environmental and program data and analytical outputs that support MERIAM’s acute malnutrition forecasting, early warning and anticipatory action.

Engagement: Works with regional and country teams to coordinate data and analytical processes, engages with government, technical, academic and other partners on data acquisition and quality, and supports information exchange and the dissemination of MERIAM outputs.

Delivery: Coordinates the acquisition of quality-assured and harmonized datasets and supports the generation of analytical outputs, dashboards and forecasting products for MERIAM modelling, early warning and anticipatory action.

Essential Job Duties

Climate and Environmental Data Acquisition and Processing – 40%

Acquire, process and quality-assure climate and environmental data, including rainfall, temperature, vegetation, floods and droughts.

Generate sub-national climate and environmental indicators across MERIAM countries.

Maintain and adapt geospatial data-processing pipelines for multi-country and country-specific use.

Analyze climate and environmental anomalies relevant to nutrition outcomes.

Maintain and update climate and environmental datasets according to agreed reporting cycles.

Data Management, Quality and Analytical Support – 40%

Coordinate data gathering, cleaning, validation and consolidation across MERIAM countries.

Conduct routine data quality checks and maintain harmonised, analysis-ready datasets.

Maintain organised and well-documented data repositories for modelling and analytical use.

Support the development of dashboards, data summaries, analytical reports and forecasting products.

Ensure appropriate data confidentiality, anonymisation and data-governance practices.

Documentation, Coordination and Project Support – 20%

Coordinate data submissions and follow up on data availability and quality with country teams.

Maintain documentation of data sources, methodologies, workflows and analytical processes.

Support technical coordination with country teams, regional colleagues, academic institutions and other partners.

Support the development and dissemination of analytical briefs, knowledge products and other MERIAM outputs.

Maintain project documentation, workplans, deliverable trackers and reporting requirements.

Support routine project coordination, reporting, procurement and related administrative processes.

V. Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with interruptions.

VI. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required by contact with the missions, mission security, or other obligations.

Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business travel as well as to the missions if appropriate. While visiting the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as infectious diseases.

VIII. Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field related to Environmental or Climate Science, Geography/GIS, Remote Sensing, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline, with at least two (2) years of relevant experience in data analysis, environmental/geospatial data processing, or nutrition and food-security information systems.

IX. Required Skills & Experience

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in data analysis, climate/environmental or geospatial data processing, or related information systems.

Experience acquiring, processing and analysing satellite, climate and environmental data at sub-national level.

Experience in data cleaning, validation, transformation, analysis and preparation of analysis-ready datasets

Proficiency in R or equivalent analytical software, including raster and vector geospatial data processing

Experience with terra, sf, exactextractr or comparable geospatial tools is an advantage

Experience in data visualisation and dashboards using R Shiny or comparable tools is desirable

Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently and collaborate effectively with regional and country teams

Verbal and written communication skills

Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to work under pressure.

IT skills and experience
Fluency in English is required
