Scope of work
The WBG Knowledge Bank Gender department in Africa seeks an experienced Project Coordinator to provide on the ground coordination, leadership, and implementation support for IFC’s gender programs in the Africa Region. The role will ensure high quality delivery of advisory services, analytics, peer learning platforms, research, knowledge management, and communications, in line with approved Implementation Plans and regional priorities.
The position will require close collaboration with Country Management Units, Industry Leads, and Project Teams, as well as external stakeholders, private sector clients, the World Bank (IBRD), and other development finance institutions. The Project Coordinator will support the implementation of country level gender projects that integrate gender considerations into IFC’s investment and advisory operations, with a particular focus on mobilizing private sector solutions that contribute to the jobs agenda across Africa.
This role will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, and will report to the East and Southern Africa Sub Regional Lead.
Roles and Responsibilities
Specific duties and accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
Project Coordination and Management (East and Southern Africa) -(35%)
• Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of IFC gender activities in the subregion, ensuring timely delivery of project milestones.
• Support the scoping, design, and processing of new and follow-on gender projects, working closely with project leads and cross-functional teams.
• Assist in preparing progress reports for IFC management, donors, clients, and partners, in compliance with IFC standards and guidelines.
• Monitor project activities, outputs, outcomes, and indicators, and contribute to evaluations and impact assessments.
• Conduct research and analytics to inform project design, pipeline development, and client engagements.
• Participate in partnership meetings and coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure effective country-level alignment and communication.
• Identify pipeline opportunities in investment and advisory operations, and support client engagement by preparing pitch decks, conducting gender diagnostics, and providing implementation support tailored to client needs and priorities.
• Stay informed on industry trends, subject matter developments, and emerging best practices to enhance gender programming in East & Southern Africa.
• Maintain strong collaboration with IFC country and industry teams, as well as IBRD, MIGA, and other internal and external partners.
• Support knowledge management, peer learning platforms, and communications for gender projects in the subregion.
Thematic and Cross-Regional Deliverables
Sourcing2Equal Phase 2 – Key Deliverables (30%)
• Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of Sourcing2Equal Phase 2 activities (both pre-implementation and implementation) in Kenya and Nigeria, ensuring timely delivery of project milestones and deliverables.
• Assist in preparing progress reports for IFC management, donors, clients, and partners, in compliance with IFC standards and donor requirements.
• Monitor project activities, outputs, outcomes, and indicators, and contribute to evaluation and impact assessment processes for Kenya and Nigeria S2E initiatives.
• Conduct research and data analysis to inform project design, pipeline development, and client engagements.
• Coordinate partnership meetings and internal stakeholder engagement to ensure effective alignment and communication across the Kenya and S2E initiatives.
• Stay informed on industry trends, procurement practices, and emerging gender focused supply chain models to enhance Sourcing2Equal programming in Kenya and Nigeria.
• Support knowledge management, event logistics, and communications (program visibility) for stakeholders in Kenya and Nigeria.
Cross Regional Support– Key Deliverables (35%)
• Provide operational support to gender projects in the West and Central Africa sub-region on a case‑by‑case basis.
• Support global gender flagging processes for investment and advisory engagements by liaising with project teams across regions.
• Contribute to the development and update of tools, templates, and guidelines used across IFC’s gender programs.
• Participate in the organization and delivery of regional events, workshops, and trainings in collaboration with gender colleagues in West and Central Africa.
• Facilitate engagement with cross‑regional partners, donors, or DFIs by coordinating meeting logistics, briefing materials, and follow‑up actions.
• Respond to urgent cross‑regional requests from IFC gender teams, including short‑term research tasks, data validation, and background note preparation.
Selection Criteria
The candidate should have expertise in gender engagements in the private sector, preferably in developing/emerging markets. S/he should have experience in managing projects and integrating the work of other (often multi-disciplinary) professional staff. S/he must be able to interact with clients, government officials, and staff from other organizations with confidence and a high degree of professionalism.
• Education: Master's degree in economics, Business Administration, International Development, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, or a related field.
• Experience: At least 5 years’ relevant work experience in project coordination, development programs, gender equality initiatives, or private sector engagement, preferably in Africa.
• Technical Skills:
o Proven ability to support project design, implementation, and monitoring.
o Strong research and analytical skills, including data collection, review, and presentation.
o Experience preparing reports, presentations, and communications for diverse stakeholders.
• Knowledge:
o Familiarity with gender issues in economic development, particularly women’s participation in business and supply chains.
o Understanding of private sector dynamics and development finance institutions.
• Coordination Skills:
o Experience organizing events, workshops, or peer learning platforms.
o Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders across regions.
• Communication Skills:
o Excellent written and verbal communication in English; ability to prepare clear, concise, and compelling materials.
o Additional language skills, especially French, Portuguese, or local languages in Kenya/Nigeria, are an advantage.
• Other:
o Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
o Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
o Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with project management tools.
o Willingness to travel within Africa for project-related activities.
