Software Development Trainee

This job requires a knowledge of software engineering practices and design patterns with focus on modern Java and web development applications. These applications run on containerized environments, Docker and K8s.

As a trainee, you will join a cross-functional development team working on software for optical network management systems. You will have the chance to be involved in different stages of the development cycle, including analysis, design, implementation and testing of new software features, using AI development life cycle methodologies and techniques.
You will be encouraged to share your ideas, ask questions and contribute to team discussions, helping us continuously improve our methods, software, and overall team experience.

The team strives to write clean, decoupled, and testable code with a clear separation of components and responsibilities. This will happen in an international environment, with team members all around the world.

Position: Internship
Duration: 12 months
Start date (tentative): October, 2026
Location: Hybrid in Carnaxide, Portugal
Education Recommendations: Currently a candidate finishing their BSc or MSc degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with an accredited school

• Develop applications in Java 17 and above;
• Write unit-tests, end-to-end tests and stress testing;
• Develop code in accordance with the system design and coding standards with senior supervision;
• Review the code of peer developers;
• Use AI daily.

You have:

• MsC degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related field;
• Fluent in English, spoken and written;
• Knowledge in Java and OO. Willingness to work with and learn modern Java, asynchronous programming and unit-testing.

It would be nice if you also had:

• Experience in using AI for SW engineering
• Good communication skills including ability to share knowledge;
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities;
• Knowledge of any of the following will be a plus: git, maven, Gradle, Jenkings ;
• Knowledge of Optical Telecommunication Technologies.
