The Religion Department at Middlebury College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in Applied Ethics beginning fall 2027. The field of specialization is open with respect to religious traditions, geographical regions, and major ethical topics. The successful candidate must be grounded in at least one religious tradition and able to teach courses on ethics at the intersections of religion and medicine and/or technology. Beyond this expectation, other possible areas may include religious perspectives on information, media, legal or environmental ethics.

Our faculty have significant freedom to develop courses according to their own intellectual interests. Teaching responsibilities would include at least one course on medical ethics and/or bioethics as well as lectures and seminars on other topics in ethics. The successful candidate will also be prepared to contribute to our team-taught “Introduction to Religion” course and a senior seminar in theories and methods in the study of religion. There may also be opportunities to contribute to other interdisciplinary programs such as International and Global Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies; Environmental Studies; Comparative Literature; Black Studies; and Privilege and Poverty.

Our department is deeply committed to undergraduate teaching, and the ideal candidate will share that investment. We also collectively represent a wide range of methodological approaches to the study of religion, and we regularly engage in conversation about the differences in our training as well as our shared research and teaching interests. As part of a full-time teaching load, the candidate will contribute to Middlebury’s First Year Seminar program and Winter Term course offerings. All faculty at Middlebury are also expected to contribute to service to the College including, but not limited to, committee membership and serving as Director or Chair of a Program or Department. This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $91,462 - $103,138 per year.
