Summary

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Duties & Responsibilities
(NOTE: denotes Essential Functions)

  1. Support Hawai‘i P-20’s GEAR UP Project Director and Project Managers with the development and implementation of GEAR UP, Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE), and University of Hawai‘i (UH) initiatives and projects.
  2. Lead the development of middle school college and career resources, including student and family presentations and workshops.
  3. Lead the development of high school college and career resources and presentations for HIDOE students and educators.
  4. Lead the development of financial aid presentations, and college access resources aligned to GEAR UP outcomes, and assist with FAFSA support for schools as necessary.
  5. Assist with coordinating and planning of in-person and virtual college and career presentations and programming across all participating GEAR UP schools.
  6. Assist with updating and developing college and career materials aligned with GEAR UP Hawaii grant initiatives, including academic preparedness, college and career aspirations, and career transitions.
  7. Assist with the implementation of college and career Navigator initiatives supporting the Class of 2027.
  8. Participate in professional development facilitated by Hawai?i P-20 and HIDOE.
  9. Participate in regular check-ins and informational meetings with Hawai?i P-20, HIDOE, and UH staff.
  10. Support the GEAR UP Project Director with data collection, tracking, and reporting related to program outcomes.
  11. Develop partnerships with other organizations (e.g., high schools, UH campuses, community-based organizations, businesses)
  12. Analyze, interpret and implement UH, state and federal guidelines as it pertains to the project.
  13. Communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including students and families and various officials from the U.S. and State Departments of Education, UH faculty, and business community.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, Business Administration, Counseling, Public Administration, or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for school counseling, teaching, student program planning and coordination; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of education, counseling and/or project management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with education, counseling and/or project management.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications

  1. Experience providing financial aid or scholarship information and support to students and families.
  2. Experience with college access programs and education issues.
  3. Experience developing and administering record keeping systems.
  4. Experience organizing college exploration, application and enrollment events.
  5. Possess at least 1 year of experience in supporting graduating high school seniors entering college or the workforce.
  6. Must possess strong ability to use technology and various software applications (Microsoft
  7. Suite, Google, WebEx, etc.).
  8. Must possess strong facilitation, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  9. Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  10. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
  11. Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  12. Must be able to work in a safe location with high speed internet access for the entire duration of the appointment.
  13. Must be available to start working in September 2026

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in education or counseling.
  2. 3-5 years of work experience as a high school counselor or teacher in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education.
  3. 3-5 years of work experience in college and career guidance, and/or post-high student
  4. program planning and coordination.
  5. 2-3 years of work experience in developing and/or implementing college and career
  6. student workshops or programs.
  7. Experience with onboarding process at University of Hawai‘i campuses
  8. Experience working with University of Hawai‘i faculty or college staff.
  9. Experience working with Hawai‘i’s public school low-income students across all backgrounds and demographics.
  10. Experience in using mobile texting platforms, such as Modern Message
  11. Experience working with GEAR UP grants, or other federal educational grants serving underserved student populations.
