Summary

The anticipated hiring range is $48,048 - $58,504. The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate to fill the position of Recreation Program Instructor, Senior in the Recreation Division. The position will report to the Recreation Center Supervisor who oversees daily operations of the community center. Duties include supporting customer service operations; planning, coordinating, and implementing recreational, social, and special event programs; maintaining program and facility reports; and ensuring the effective delivery of services and activities to center participants and the community. The position will work collaboratively with staff, community partners, and other stakeholders to support sufficient facility operations and the successful implementation of programs and services.

Examples of duties

  • Planning, implementing, leading, and evaluating various recreational, athletic, leisure, and social programs, activities, and events.
  • Enforcing safety rules, standards, and procedures.
  • Resolving disputes and providing guidance and support to program and center participants.
  • Consulting with parents, coaches, teachers, volunteers, participants, and community members on program implementation and evaluation.
  • Helping to maintain a clean and safe area within the facility and on the external grounds.
  • Preparing room setups, playing fields, etc. for programs and activities.
  • Assisting with communication and advertisement of programs and events to the community.
  • Providing participant transportation to and from scheduled events in city vehicles.
  • Organizing and participating in meetings.
  • Assisting in the recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of temporary staff and volunteers.
  • General clerical and administrative tasks
  • Providing excellent internal and external customer service
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate's Degree in parks and recreation or business administration
  • Two years of paraprofessional recreation program experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some assignments may require background verification, a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • Other trainings may be required after hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly feel, talk, hear, see, use repetitive motions, crawl, stand, walk, and work with one's fingers; frequently push, lift, grasp, pull, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and balance; and occasionally climb. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work (exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects), but may differ based on area of focus. The working conditions may contain environmental hazards, depending on area of focus.
