Summary

Performs repair, maintenance, and upholstery work on seating and related interior components used at the MBTA . Re-upholsters office furniture and fabricates or repairs covers, canvas, tarpaulins, hoods, and protective enclosures for equipment and work activities. Works under supervision in accordance with established Vehicle Maintenance practices and procedures.

Examples of duties

  • Performs all necessary procedures to upholstery used in the Authority's assets.
  • Repairs or replaces upholstery (including cushions, drapes and floor coverings) in buses, trolleys, trucks and other MBTA vehicles.
  • Removes old upholstery from seats and door panels of vehicles. Measures new padding and covering materials, performs pattern layout procedures and cuts materials to required dimensions, using knife or shears.
  • Performs the necessary stitching and sewing procedures (by hand and machine) required for upholstery manufacture and other items such as bags and curtains.
  • Adjusts or replaces seat springs and ties them in place.
  • Fits covering to seat frame and secures it with glue and tacks.
  • Repairs and rebuilds upholstered furniture. Removes covering, webbing, padding, arms, back and sides of work piece, using various hands tools. Installs new covering and padding material.
  • Assembles and repairs vehicle destination signs, as assigned
  • Performs related duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Technical skills necessary to perform listed duties as normally acquired through a vocational high school program or equivalent.
  • At least four (4) years of related upholstery experience demonstrating knowledge of upholstery techniques and practices.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use the hand tools and equipment required to perform the work
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with customers, employees, and vendors.
  • The ability to pass background screenings; a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check; and the MBTA's medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Have a satisfactory work record including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records.
