At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving.

The Engineer 7 - Traffic position is responsible for planning, analysis, design, inspection and inventory of traffic signal systems, signing, pavement markings, channelization and all associated traffic controls for all highways and urban streets, This position is in District 03 and reports to the ADA of Operations.

Examples of duties

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:

Three years of licensed engineering experience; or

Seven years of professional engineering experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.

A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.

There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.

NOTES:
Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience. Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.

Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Supplemental information

Job Duties:
The Traffic Engineer's primary duties:

  • Directs all district traffic engineering activities and traffic studies.
  • Coordinates and directs the activities of the district sign shop, striping crew and electricians to ensure that assigned duties are completed in a timely manner
  • Reviews driveway and access permit applications at the request of the district permit specialist.
  • Reviews plans of construction and/or maintenance projects and approves traffic control plans which may modify existing traffic control devices.
  • Investigates and analyses existing traffic control devices at abnormal accident locations.
  • Oversees the district outdoor advertising, junkyard, logo, and tourist oriented directional sign (TODS) programs for compliance with federal highway administration requirements.

This role requires collaborative leadership, adaptability, and strong communication skills.

Compensation:
This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $4,627.20/biweekly.

Licensing Requirements: Must have a current Louisiana Professional Engineering License.

Appointment Type: Promotional, open only to current permanent classified DOTD employees.
