Summary

Serves as the supervisor of Transit Operators. Serves as a dispatcher with other trained dispatchers. Assists in the planning, organization, and operation of the City's transit system. Also performs the full range of driving, dispatching and scheduling duties.

Examples of duties

  1. Assigns vehicles and drivers on daily bus and/or ParaTransit routes to balance vehicle use and ensure balanced operations. Schedules and assigns extra trips as required.
  2. Tracks all paperwork to be completed and turned-in, including but not limited to time-sheets, time-off requests, accident/incident reports, courtesy cards, and passenger counts.
  3. Coordinates vehicle servicing and repair with fleet maintenance to maintain scheduled operations.
  4. Provides training and maintains training records for each driver.
  5. Assists bus drivers in the event of mechanical problems, route delays, and passenger related challenges.
  6. Provides support to drivers in supplies and materials. Coordinates the replacement of supplies as needed.
  7. Performs periodic spot checks of vehicle inspections, and performs ride-along to provide evaluation and feedback of driver skills and route conditions.
  8. Coordinates and supervises drivers via two-way radio or telephone communications.
  9. Assists ParaTransit customers in scheduling rides. Communicates to the customer if their request cannot be met. Provides customer with available options. Enters validated requests into the ParaTransit scheduling program.
  10. Communicates change requests and cancellations via radio to drivers on the road.
  11. Takes customer's questions, concerns, and/or complaints over the telephone or in person at front desk and documents their concerns as required. Coordinates solution(s) and communicates with management, team members, and customer. Escalates complaints to Transit Manager when necessary.
  12. Maintains a record of lost items on the buses, contact owners when information is available, supervises the labeling and storage of lost items, and prepares for disposal of lost items according to SunTran procedures.
  13. Keeps riders guide and schedule holders stocked.
  14. Collects and tracks data as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to route deviations, detours, on-time performance, missed trips, accidents, incidents, unscheduled outages, vehicle miles, dead miles, fuel usage, exhaust regeneration fluid, and passenger counts.
  15. Assists in ensuring compliance with state and federal laws governing transit systems.
  16. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Constant exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and meeting the demands of an operating transit system with deadlines and schedules. May work indoors, sitting, with the ability to move at will, and to work in the field monitoring and reviewing transit activities. A computer keyboard is used for entering and retrieving data and preparing documents. May work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including cold, extreme heat, and rain when responding to accident scenes, operating buses, or when supervising or assisting transit drivers.

Note: Assignments include early morning, late evening, weekend and holiday work shifts.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Directly related experience may substitute for education.

Experience: Two years’ experience in driving passengers in a van, shuttle bus or bus on a scheduled or on-call basis. Experience in dealing with disabled passengers or other special needs populations is desired. Lead worker experience and/or basic training in supervision is desired.

Licenses and or Certification:

  • Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License. A valid Utah Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and air brake endorsement must be obtained within 30 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • No DUI or DWI convictions within prior twenty-four (24) months and no moving violations within twelve (12) months.
  • Possess a current DOT Medical Card
