Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

General Requirements:

  • A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. NOTE: Candidate must obtain the SCBA C.A.R.E. certification, as defined by MSA, within three months of date of hire or promotion and maintain certification throughout employment.

NOTE: The City of Pittsburgh, as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. Qualifying Requirements:

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience in repairing, servicing/maintaining equipment (e.g. self-contained breathing apparatus, related fire equipment, etc.). (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: None required for this position.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position, based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above. The Total Qualifying Requirement is one (1) year. (See NOTE under General Application Requirements regarding education/training verification.)

Supplemental information

  • Inspects, repairs, maintains, tests and recertifies all City SCBA and respirator equipment (e.g., Fire Bureau, Emergency Medical Services Bureau and Police Bureau).
  • Inspects, repairs, maintains, and tests other related SCBA equipment (personal alarms, backpacks, etc.).
  • Maintains all records relating to testing and recertification.
  • Coordinates duties with equipment manufacturers, vendors and associated SCBA agencies.
  • Maintains SCBA inventory parts system.
  • Answers and responds to daily calls from engine companies, truck companies and Emergency Medical Services and Police for all breakdowns and malfunctions of SCBA, backpacks, and related equipment.
  • Performs quantitative fit test in accordance with Manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
