JOB TITLE:
Mechanic I Transit
JOB PURPOSE:
Perform as entry level transit mechanic. Perform preventative maintenance and minor to intermediate repairs. Assemble, maintain, repair, adjust and modify equipment, transit vehicles and/or facilities and machinery; operate vehicles, equipment and/or machinery.
This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
This position is grant funded and considered at-will employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform basic to intermediate vehicle/equipment maintenance and repairs to transit fleet to include Gillig, International buses, foreign and domestic vehicles, UTV and ATVs. Diagnose, maintain, test and repair fleet and/or vehicles to keep in optimum and safe conditions.
- Perform timely routine vehicle preventive maintenance program in accordance with DOT and FTA regulations to ensure safe operating condition of bus and vehicle fleet.
- Inspect vehicle components, parts, and accessories and perform basic repair and maintenance on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles to include replacing bearings, axle seals, brake master cylinders, etc. Disassemble and inspect components and parts for wear.
- Repair, overhaul, replace and rebuild water and fuel pumps, air conditioning components, compressors, radiators, etc. Rewire electrical systems.
- Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance and repair work as well as time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Maintain tools, equipment and shop area to ensure availability and safety.
- Operate and test-drive vehicles. Respond to road calls and may arrange for towing, bus or vehicle replacement or field repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma or GED, Vocational School, on-the-job training or Associate’s degree
Experience: 0-2 years working experience
Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:
- Valid Class C driver’s license with motor vehicle (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy
- Ability to obtain CDL class B license withing 12 months of hire
- Ability to obtain First/Aid CPR certification within 12 months of hire
- Ability to obtain ASE Entry-Level Technician (Medium/Heavy) within 12 months of hire, including the following:
- ASE Brakes Certification
- ASE Diesel Engines Certification
- ASE Electrical Systems Certification
- ASE Suspension & Steering Certification
- ASE Inspection Maintenance and Minor Repair Certification
- EPA Section 608 Certification
- Must be able to pass all drug and/or alcohol screenings required by the UW Drug and Alcohol policy and applicable DOT regulations
Experience Evaluation
Minimum experience requirements are evaluated on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis. Relevant part-time experience will be prorated based on hours worked. For example, two years working an average of 20 hours per week is equivalent to approximately one year of full-time experience.
Applicants must include the average hours worked per week for all current and previous positions. Failure to provide this information may affect the evaluation of qualifications.

WORK LOCATION:
On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
