As the Street Maintenance Supervisor, you will oversee daily street maintenance operations, ensuring that all tasks are performed efficiently and to the highest standards. This role requires a hands-on leader with strong organizational skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to make quick, effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.

This position during the summer months will work a 4-day work week between the months of mid-April to mid-November.

Examples of duties

1. Supervise regular and temporary employees, including making recommendations relative to discharge, layoffs or suspensions, disciplinary actions, and the adjustment of grievances and performance evaluations.

2. Review crew sizes, work methods and maintenance methods, and maintenance and construction practices to ensure that work is being carried out in the most efficient and economical manner.

3. Assist in the preparation of the budget and cost projections of materials and equipment for street projects; assist in the development and coordination of annual project schedules and plans for city overlay, seal, snow removal, crack sealing, and concrete repair projects; prepare specifications for subcontracting and equipment material bids; and assist in the coordination of the department’s maintenance management system.

4. Supervise miscellaneous projects, including repair and replacement of utility cuts, street sweeping and cleaning, pothole patching, litter pickup, enforcement of weight limits, and removal of snow and ice.

5. Supervise street construction and repair activities, including cold and hot mix asphalt patching, resurfacing, and seal coating of City streets; crack sealing and concrete repair; and hauling, storing, and mixing of sand and gravel on site, etc.

6. Supervise the maintenance and repair of flood control systems, including assurance that flood gates and flaps are operational, river channel dredging, and levee maintenance and restoration.

7. Receive, investigate, and resolve citizen complaints.

8. Perform other such duties and responsibilities as may be necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.

Qualifications

Graduation from a standard high school or GED certification and trade school with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the construction and maintenance of streets and related public works; or any such combination of education, experience, and/or training which may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.

• Knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, and practices of street and levee maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of automotive and related equipment required in the maintenance of streets.
• Ability to lay out, direct, and supervise the workers performing manual, semiskilled, and skilled activities.
