We are looking for an experienced Shop Foreperson to lead day-to-day maintenance operations for on-highway trucks, mobile equipment, and heavy construction equipment. This role is ideal for a hands-on maintenance leader who takes pride in coaching technicians, solving complex mechanical problems, and keeping equipment safe, reliable, and ready for the job.
What You’ll Do
- Lead shop activities during regular maintenance, repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance work.
- Schedule, assign, and support technicians to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain on-highway trucks, mobile equipment, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, pumps, valves, motors, gears, and related components.
- Operate and inspect equipment to diagnose defects and verify repairs.
- Dismantle, reassemble, and test equipment using hoists, hand tools, power tools, micrometers, gauges, and other shop equipment.
- Plan work procedures, identify repair solutions, and recommend part redesigns, substitutions, or rearrangements when needed.
- Manage repair parts, preventative maintenance materials, inventory, and shop organization.
- Maintain accurate records for labor, equipment time, parts usage, inventory control, and repair activity.
- Coordinate with managers, operations teams, and maintenance staff to support efficient equipment availability.
- Help maintain clean, organized, and safe shop and maintenance areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the team and business needs.
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience maintaining and repairing trucks, diesel engines, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Proven ability to lead, schedule, coach, and support mechanics or maintenance technicians.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose mechanical issues and determine effective repair solutions.
- Ability to manage parts, inventory, work records, and maintenance documentation accurately.
- Professional, courteous communication with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and the public.
- Willingness to work as part of a team and assist others as needed.
- Two-year certificate from a college or technical school preferred.
- Class B CDL preferred; valid driver’s license required, with the ability to meet fleet safety program qualifications.
Safety & Compliance
- Lead by example to ensure a safe work environment and full compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Follow all OSHA, MSHA, company, and Employee Handbook requirements for safe working practices.
- Use the appropriate tools and equipment for each task and ensure PPE is worn in designated operations and production areas.
- Report problems, hazards, and equipment concerns to management promptly.
- Promote safe, efficient work habits across the shop team.
Work Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old due to the nature of the work environment.
- Must pass a pre-employment Fit for Work physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
- Must be able to provide valid documentation for I-9 employment eligibility.
- Must report to work at the designated start time and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
- Must be willing to work overtime, nights, weekends, outdoors in extreme temperatures, and away from home when required.
- Must be able to lift, carry, and hold materials, tools, and supplies as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, squat, stretch, talk, and hear.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, manipulate objects, and operate controls.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a repetitive basis.
- Ability to perform job duties that may include frequent lifting, shifting gears, covering and uncovering loads, and working around equipment and vehicles.
- Vision abilities, with correction if needed, include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
Work Environment
- Work may be performed in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Work may involve exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, electrical shock or burn hazards, and loud noise levels.
- The noise level is typically moderate but may be loud in some areas.
