Summary

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety Police is seeking applicants for commissioned law-enforcement positions in the Baton Rouge area. DPS Police officers perform proactive patrol, criminal and traffic enforcement, crash and criminal investigations, emergency response, physical-security operations, and major-event assignments.

No previous law-enforcement experience is required for appointment as a DPS Police Cadet. Experienced officers with an active Louisiana POST certification may qualify for appointment as a DPS Police Officer or Senior Officer based on verified qualifying experience.

DPS Police is looking for applicants who demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, professionalism, selfless service, and effective communication.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

• Work may include proactive vehicle, foot, or bicycle patrol
• Respond to calls for service and emergencies
• Capital Detail: Conduct Proactive patrols throughout the State Complex and downtown Baton Rouge
• Conduct Criminal and traffic enforcement
• Investigate crimes and crashes
• State Facilities Security: Provide law-enforcement services at assigned facilities in the Baton Rouge area

Career Progression: This position participates in a Career Progression Group

Work Schedule: Capital Detail officers work 12-hour shifts from 6:00AM to 6:00PM. State Facilities Security officers generally work from Monday-Friday 8AM to 4:30PM

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

The SPECIAL ENTRANCE RATE (SER) for DPS Cadet is $22.25 per hour, DPS Police Officer is $24.59 per hour, and DPS Police Senior Officer is $26.31 per hour.

An applicant who meets the minimum qualifications and possesses an active Louisiana POST certification from a Louisiana-accredited training academy may be appointed without a Protective Services Exam score in accordance with State Civil Service Rule 22.8(e). The POST certification must not be suspended or pending a revocation hearing.
