Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach 24 credits per academic year in American Sign Language (ASL) at all undergraduate levels;
• Develop curriculum and teaching materials toward a full four-year ASL program;
• Advise students;
• Coordinate curricula, and ensure articulation between levels and between UH campuses;
• Oversee placement exams, course equivalency evaluations, back credits and language waiver petitions;
• Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels.
• Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Either: (a) M.A. degree in American Sign Language, Sign Language Teaching, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Education, or a related field; or (b) B.A. degree in American Sign Language, Sign Language Teaching, Deaf Studies, Sign Linguistics or a related field with three years of full or part-time teaching ASL at the college or university level;
2. Native or near-native proficiency in ASL;
3. Demonstrated involvement in the Deaf community.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Desirable Qualifications

1. 5 years or more of experience teaching ASL at the university level;
2. Experience with curriculum development;
3. ASLTA certification;
4. Familiarity with ASL-English interpreter training requirements.
