Researcher I

Position Summary

The School of Health Professions Department of Nutrition Sciences is seeking a Researcher I to help design, conduct and produce nutrition interventions within the University of Alabama at Birmingham Dept. of Nutrition Sciences. This would include, but not be limited to, working within the metabolic and teaching kitchens to design, assemble, prepare, and distribute meals and snacks for clinically controlled feeding studies and nutrition programs using specialized equipment.

Must complete the ServSafe Food Safety Manager exam (provided by ServSafe, paid by the metabolic kitchen) within thirty (30) days from the date of employment.

General Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, to perform various support functions in a research laboratory.
To maintain equipment, computer database and lab supplies.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Assist registered dietitians with nutrition data and analysis from 24-hour recalls, Food Frequency Questionnaires, and other nutrition data collection and reporting as needed.
Perform food safety and sanitation duties.
Work alongside other staff and students to meet the needs of multiple clinical controlled feeding studies and teaching kitchen programs and events.
Analyze nutrition status of meals and assist in the creation and testing of menus that meet the needs of clinical controlled feeding study protocols.
Assist with quality improvement assessments.
Work under registered dietitians and kitchen managers on tasks and duties to support the success of the kitchens.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Hourly Range: $15.38- $ 19.66

Qualifications

Associate's degree in related field OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

Basic cooking skills and knowledge preferred.
Critical thinking skills.
Nutrition Software knowledge.
Previous experience working in fast-paced food service or clinical trials.
Previous experience working in nutrition research, food service, or with food service managers or dietitians; experience with nutrition and dietary interventions; and ability to apply critical thinking skills and communicate effectively.
Complete HIPAA and other necessary training provided by the metabolic kitchen to be able to work within nutrition research.
