Summary

RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the application:

PD Registered Professional Nurse - Weekend rate is $41.00/hour

PD Registered Professional Nurse w/ Bachelor's Degree Weekday rate is $41.00/hour. Weekend rate is $43.00/hour

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS: In order for an application to be approved, the applicant must clearly show the training, education, experience, and/or licensure/certification stated in the Typical Qualifications. All qualifying information must appear on the application form. No credit will be given for a Work Experience description that is unclear.

The work involves responsibility for coordinating patient care and for performing nursing services requiring substantial specialized judgment and skills. In the Livingston County Department of Health, the incumbent performs nursing care in patients' homes and in clinic settings. Supervision may be exercised over Licensed Practical Nurses and related auxiliary nursing personnel. Work is performed under the general direction of a higher-level nursing position and in accordance with a prescribed nursing care plan. A Registered Professional Nurse does related work as assigned.

Examples of duties

  • Assesses patient nursing care needs and prepares, implements, and evaluates a nursing care plan;
  • Assesses symptoms and carries out diagnostic procedures ordered by the physician;
  • Prepares and applies dressings, gives medication, and therapeutic treatments as prescribed by the physician;
  • Provides education to the patient or members of patient's family regarding the patient's diet, health habits, the carrying out of treatments at home, and rehabilitative measures as authorized by the physician;
  • Performs related services for patients in the prevention of illness and the attainment of maximum health;
  • Makes contacts with appropriate social services and health care agencies, as needed, to ensure the provision of patient needed services or follow-up care;
  • Maintains a variety of records and prepares reports;
  • May supervise Licensed Practical Nurses and auxiliary staff; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • In the Livingston County Department of Health, travels to patients' homes to provide in-home services and transports medical supplies and durable medical equipment as needed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; working knowledge of materia medica, hospital dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene; good customer service skills; good observation skills; good organizational skills; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to perform duties in accordance with the American Nurses Association Code of Professional Nurses; ability to maintain an appropriate level of discretion and confidentiality; ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to keep accurate, clear, legible records and make reports; ability to organize tasks and work efficiently; ability to reach, bend, etc.; ability to get along well with patients, physicians, and others; ability to carry out successfully the therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to plan and supervise the work of sub-professional and non-technical personnel; mental alertness; cheerfulness; firmness; good moral character; patience; emotional stability; sympathetic attitude toward the sick; physical condition commensurate to the demands of the position.
In the County Department of Health: ability to lift; ability to climb stairs; ability to carry medical supplies and durable medical equipment; ability to enter and move within private residences.

  • Graduation from a nursing education program acceptable to the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS – LIVINGSTON COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH:

  1. Must be able to lift, reach, bend, etc. to provide patient care.
  2. Must be able to climb stairs.
  3. Must be able to carry medical supplies and durable medical equipment.
  4. Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
  5. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
  6. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.

Registered Professional Nurse – NC in the County Service

Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
