Summary
Performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in maintenance and construction operations for the Grounds Maintenance and Construction Division. Operates heavy equipment such as motor grader to grade ball fields, roads and construction sites; tractors and trailers to haul equipment and material to job sites, and farm tractors and backhoes to dig trenches, spread dirt and gravel, haul dirt and debris, and cut grass and weeds. Serves as a lead worker to other Operators or Construction Maintenance Workers, providing guidance and supervision as needed. Responsibilities also include performing a variety of construction/maintenance work such as assisting with construction of new buildings or remodeling of existing structures, maintaining athletic fields, and assisting with plumbing and irrigation work. Performs minor preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Work is performed outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to the usual hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work.

Operates heavy tractors and trailers to haul equipment and materials to job sites; operates motor grader to grade ball fields, roads, and construction sites; operates loaders and attachments to spread gravel, woodchips, mulch, dirt, and concrete; operates auger to drill holes for playground equipment; operates a compactor to compact gravel and dirt surfaces. Uses a backhoe to load and spread construction materials, to do excavation work, to lay culvert and conduit, and as a crane to move and install signs, monuments, and dumpsters, etc.; operates a surf rake to maintain the beach area of Yorktown.
Serves as a lead worker as needed, providing guidance, training, and supervision to other Equipment Operators and other Construction/Maintenance Workers. Operates tractors and attachments to cut grass at schools, parks and fields; applies fertilizer and seed; operates bull dozers to spread construction materials; cuts swales, and performs major earth work; operates a track loader to load construction materials for hauling, land clearing, demolition, etc.
Operates a forklift to move and load/unload equipment, inventory, and supplies, etc. Uses a variety of hand operated equipment such as chain saws, plate compactors, and jackhammers; uses mechanical and carpentry tools to assemble and install playground equipment, guard rails, and to perform minor repairs.
Performs a wide variety of construction/maintenance activities such as: maintaining athletic fields and playground equipment; repairing fences, assisting with the installation of sewer lines and plumbing, and roofing. Assists in concrete framing, pouring, and finishing.
Makes adjustments and repairs to existing irrigation systems.
Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Assists in snow removal operations, as needed; assists in training less experienced equipment operators, and performs other related work as required.
Examples of duties
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and 2 to 3 years of experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
Possession of a Class A Commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certification as a State Category 60 Registered Technician is required within 6 months of hire.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include driving record, criminal history and background checks.
Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of the procedures for operating, inspecting, and maintaining assigned equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations, as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of motorized equipment.
General knowledge of groundskeeping practices and general knowledge of basic construction practices.
Ability to safely and effectively operate assigned motorized equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor as required.
Supplemental information
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tractors, front end loaders, excavators, compactors, bulldozers, etc., and hand tools including shovels, wrenches, carpentry tools, laser and grades rods, torches, etc. Must be able to lift between 50 and 75 pounds, and be able to stand, bend, and stoop for a portion of the day when doing construction or maintenance work.
