Summary

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety Police is seeking applicants for a commissioned Sergeant law-enforcement position in the Baton Rouge area. DPS Police officers perform proactive patrol, criminal and traffic enforcement, crash and criminal investigations, emergency response, physical-security operations, major-event, and confinement of incarcerated individuals. DPS Police is looking for applicants who demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, professionalism, selfless service, and effective communication.

The incumbent of this position serves as the first-line supervisor of a shift of DPS Police Officers. They prepare duty assignments, assign officers to respond to calls, direct, inspect and review the law enforcement activities of their subordinate officers.

Examples of duties

Four years of experience as a DPS Police Officer; OR

Six years of law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties:

DPS Police officers perform law-enforcement and public-safety duties based on their assigned section. Work may include proactive vehicle, foot, or bicycle patrol; response to calls for service and emergencies; enforcement of criminal and traffic laws; investigation of crimes, complaints, crashes, and suspicious activity; arrests and citations; evidence and witness documentation; first aid; incident and traffic control; court testimony; facility security assessments; and preparation of reports, affidavits, warrants, citations, and related records. Officers may also support major events, civil disturbances, emergency operations, and temporary statewide assignments.

Location and Assignment:

The position included in this recruitment is located in the Baton Rouge area and will be assigned to the DPS/Capitol Detail section within the Office of State Police Special Operations Division.

Work Schedules:

Capitol Detail officers work 12-hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The schedule alternates between a five-day workweek and a two-day workweek, and officers generally rotate between day shift and night shift each month. State Facilities Security officers generally work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All DPS Police employees may be required to work overtime, holidays, training assignments, special events, emergency operations, adjusted schedules, or temporary statewide deployments based on operational needs.

Compensation:

The standard hiring rate for DPS Police Sergeant is $30.12 per hour, or $62,649.60 annually. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications established in the applicable job specification. The current maximum salary for DPS Police Sergeant is $47.77 per hour, or $99,362.00 annually.

Residency Requirement

Employees must reside within 75 miles of their assigned duty station by the date of appointment. Applicants who do not currently live within the required area must be willing and able to relocate before appointment. Applicants who cannot meet the residency requirement will not be considered.
