Medical Resident – Podiatry

Position Summary

The Medical Resident – Podiatry participates in a structured postgraduate podiatric medical and surgical residency program under the supervision of licensed and credentialed attending physicians and residency program leadership. The resident provides patient care, develops clinical and surgical skills, participates in educational activities, and fulfills the clinical, academic, and professional requirements of the residency program.

The resident is responsible for providing safe, timely, and compassionate patient care while working within the scope of training, institutional policies, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Evaluate and manage patients in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and ambulatory care settings as assigned.
• Obtain and document comprehensive medical histories and physical examinations.
• Develop differential diagnoses and appropriate treatment plans under the supervision of attending physicians.
• Participate in the diagnosis and treatment of podiatric and lower-extremity conditions, including diabetic foot conditions, wounds, infections, deformities, and other related disorders.
• Participate in surgical procedures and perioperative patient management appropriate to the resident's level of training and clinical competency.
• Perform procedures under appropriate supervision and in accordance with institutional policies and approved clinical privileges.
• Participate in rounds, consultations, clinics, conferences, case presentations, and other educational activities.
• Monitor patient progress and communicate significant clinical findings and changes in condition to the appropriate supervising physician.
• Complete timely, accurate, and comprehensive medical record documentation.
• Order and interpret laboratory, diagnostic, and imaging studies under appropriate supervision.
• Coordinate patient care with attending physicians, nursing staff, medical students, allied health professionals, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Provide appropriate patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, medications, procedures, and follow-up care.
• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, research, and scholarly activities as required by the residency program.
• Demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention, patient safety, medication safety, and hospital policies and procedures.
• Participate in on-call responsibilities, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as assigned by the residency program.
• Maintain professional conduct and effective communication with patients, families, physicians, staff, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain all required licenses, registrations, certifications, immunizations, training, and credentials.
• Participate in required institutional and residency program orientation, training, competency assessments, and evaluations.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the resident's level of training and as assigned by the Program Director or supervising physician.

Education and Training

• Graduate of an accredited Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) program.
• Enrollment in an approved podiatric medical and surgical residency program.
• Successful completion of all required residency program educational and clinical requirements.

Licensure and Certification

• Must possess and maintain the appropriate New York State podiatric license or limited permit, as applicable to the resident's training status.
• Must maintain current certifications and credentials required by the hospital, residency program, and applicable regulatory bodies.
• Must satisfy all credentialing and privileging requirements applicable to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of podiatric medicine, surgery, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and related clinical sciences.
• Ability to obtain accurate patient histories and perform appropriate physical examinations.
• Ability to develop clinical assessments and treatment plans under appropriate supervision.
• Strong clinical judgment appropriate to the resident's level of training.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
• Ability to prioritize responsibilities and function effectively in a fast-paced clinical setting.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality care, professionalism, and ethical standards.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to perform duties in a hospital and clinical environment, including prolonged standing and walking, participation in patient care activities, and the ability to respond to clinical emergencies. The resident must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Relationship

The Medical Resident – Podiatry reports to the Podiatry Residency Program Director and works under the clinical supervision of attending physicians and other appropriately credentialed members of the medical staff.

Qualifications

Education and Training
