The Savannah Police Department is seeking a dependable and dedicated Groom - Part-Time - Mounted Patrol to provides daily care for police horses and maintains the Mounted Patrol stables, equipment, and grounds. The employee supports mounted officers by ensuring horses are healthy, clean, properly fed, and prepared for patrols, ceremonies, training, and public events. Groomers need to be able to drive small tractors, lawn mowers, and have knowledge of horse industry equipment and tack.

This position is ideal for an individual with previous horse-handling, stable, farm, veterinary, or equine-care experience who understands the importance of safe animal handling, cleanliness, consistency, and attention to detail.

The Groom will work closely with Mounted Patrol officers and supervisors and will be expected to learn and follow Savannah Police Department and City of Savannah policies, Mounted Patrol procedures, and established horse-care practices. The position also provides an opportunity to support the Mounted Patrol Unit at public and community events throughout Savannah.

Examples of duties

• Feed and water horses according to established schedules and individual dietary requirements.
• Groom horses, including brushing, bathing, hoof cleaning, mane and tail care, and checking for injuries or illness.
• Clean stalls and stable areas, replace bedding, remove manure, and maintain sanitary conditions. Groomers will utilize a tractor in bedding removal. Groomers will remove trash from buildings and clean the rest rooms as needed.
• Prepare horses for duty by assisting with timely feedings, saddling, bridling, loading, unloading, and handling.
• Exercise or walk horses when directed and safely move them between stalls, paddocks, trailers, and work areas.
• Observe horse health and behavior, documenting concerns and notifying mounted officers or supervisors.
• Maintain tack and equipment, including cleaning saddles, bridles, blankets, grooming tools, and stable supplies.
• Assist veterinarians and farriers during examinations, treatments, vaccinations, and hoof care.
• Maintain the facility, including barns, feed rooms, paddocks, fencing, trailers, and surrounding grounds.
• Track feed, bedding, medicine, and equipment inventories and report supply needs.
• Supports community events by helping prep horses involving the SPD Mounted Patrol Unit.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

• Previous horse handling, stable, farm, veterinary, or equine-care experience.
• Feeding, grooming, stable sanitation, basic equine health, and safe handling.
• Able to learn SPD and City of Savannah policies over the groomer's position.
• Able to learn SPD Mounted horse grooming procedures.
• May need to lift heavy feed bags, move bedding, carry equipment, and assist with handling large, powerful animals.
• Work often requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, for extended periods of time.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Work Location: 1145 Dean Forest Rd

Work Hours: *The shift time is generally 7:00 am until 4:00 pm (with a lunch break). The scheduled total weekly h*ours are 28 hours.Early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies as assigned.
