About Us: The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:

• The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
• The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

The purpose of this position is to assist with the implementation of recreational programs and activities, enforcing safety and City policies and procedures, and providing guidance to program participants. Duties involve preparing recreation facilities including field preparation, taking reservations, meeting rooms, fields and courts for planned activities and events; setting up sports equipment, audio visual equipment, tables, chairs and/or recreational equipment needed for scheduled activities.

Additional Information: This position is:

• THIS POSITION REQUIRES AVAILABILITY TO WORK ANY DAY OF THE WEEK TO INCLUDE WEEKENDS, EVENINGS AND HOLIDAYS.
• Operating hours can start with field prep at 2 AM or 10 PM, tournament site supervision at 7 AM on weekends, or Youth Sports set-up and support at 5 PM.
• Is typically scheduled to work up to 19 hours per week.
• Work locations include: Sahuaro Ranch Park, Glendale Youth Sports Complex, Paseo Sports Complex, and etc.
• FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
• Has an hourly rate of $16.50.

Examples of duties

1. Assist with supervision of youth and adult sports program participants.
2. Assist Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Specialist with implementation of calendar activities.
3. Assist with leading youth and adults participants in a variety of sport and recreational activities.
4. Field site supervisor.
5. Sports coach.
6. Assist in maintaining and keeping sports complex fields playable during and after play.
7. Ensures facilities and equipment are safe, clean, and arranged to meet the requirements of scheduled programs, activities, and events.
8. Maintains responsibility for equipment at facility and ensures proper storage and inventory are completed daily.
9. Provides customer service by communicating with the public, vendors, and internal staff; answering questions; notifying public of program changes and confirmation; registering participants for program.
10. Knowledge of: The rules and regulations of various games such as: softball, baseball, soccer, and flag football
11. Acts as a Sports Official and maintains order at games and contests. Umpiring for evening adult softball games is an option if qualified.
12. Participate in the preparation of ball fields to include watering the fields, dragging the fields, putting out bases, chalking lines and operating the lighting system.
13. Maintenance and monitoring of athletic fields and recreation equipment.
14. Assists with the coordination of adult and youth ball games in the parks.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field and experience supervising recreation or sports programs.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors in all weather conditions and on all types of terrain.
2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; use hands and fingers; and reach with hands and arms, talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
3. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.
4. The employee must be physically able to operate manual landscaping and custodial tools.
5. The employee must be physically able to drive Glendale parks utility vehicles.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
